Chapter 1: Space is emptiness

Emptiness is an essential aspect of life. It is the unavoidable opposite of fullness, of busyness, of activity. It is the natural and universally present background to everything we see. Emptiness is silence, an open field, a barren room, a blank canvas, an empty page. Emptiness is often taken for granted and thought best used by filling in. It is generally ignored by all but the few who consciously manipulate it to establish contrast, to create drama, or to provide a place of actual or visual rest. It is best used as counterpoint to filled-in space. Composers and architects use it. Painters, photographers, and sculptors use it. And designers use it. The most important step toward sensitizing yourself to using space is first seeing it. Gregg Berryman writes in his Notes on Graphic Design and Visual Communication, “Everyone ‘looks’ at things but very few people ‘see’ effectively. Designers must be able to see. Seeing means a trained super-awareness of visual codes like shape, color, texture, pattern, and contrast. These codes make a language of vision, much as words are building blocks for verbal language.” Being trained to see more critically is best guided by a teacher, but such training relies on exposure to excellent art and design samples.

The figure/ground relationship
The single most overlooked element in visual design is emptiness. The lack of attention it receives explains the abundance of ugly and unread design. (Ugly and unread describe two separate functions of design which occasionally occur at the same time. Ugly refers to an object’s aesthetic qualities, an evaluation of whether we like the object. Unread is infinitely more important, because an unread design is an utter failure. A printed document, regardless of its purpose or attributes, is never intended to be ignored.) Design elements are always viewed in relation to their surroundings. Emptiness in two-dimensional design is called white space and lies behind the type and imagery. But it is more than just the background of a design, for if a design’s background alone were properly constructed, the overall design would immediately double in clarity and usefulness. Thus, when it is used intriguingly, white space becomes foreground. The emptiness becomes a positive shape and the positive and negative areas become intricately linked.

Expansive and Thought Provoking

Considering a degree in graphic design, I recently picked up this book to get a better understanding of the field. With only a quick scan of the titles available on the shelf, "The Elements of Graphic Design" seemed to be the most approachable. I have a studio arts degree, so I was most curious of how the visual language of design compares and contrasts with fine arts. I found "The Elements" not only answered my initial questions, but gave me a good grounding in understanding good design and has changed the way I view design text entirely.

The book is scholarly and thought provoking, yet thoroughly enjoyable; examples are well illustrated; the ideas expansive and far reaching. I think it would be a good text book. Whether I go forward in the field or not, I'm very glad I bought this book, and will return to it again and again for review.

Do as he says, not as he does.

I agree with many of the other reviewers. This is an essential design book and it's ugly as sin to look at.

There is no clear visual hierarchy here and in practice, the author seems to hate the white space that he spends so much of the text (rightfully) exalting. The pages are busy and designers with problems focusing (nearly all of us, right?) are going to find the pages nearly unreadable.

If you can get past the layout though, this is one of the best introductions to graphic design that I have ever read. The content is well written and explained and easy to understand. You can immediately apply it to your work and see your layouts and logos improve immediately. The book is essential.

Buy it for the content and apply that content, the quality of your work will skyrocket.

Overall, if you are a designer, you should absolutely own this book, but maybe look elsewhere for examples to illustrate the principles contained within.

Excellent design manual - great introduction to the concepts

"The Elements of Graphic Design" covers exactly that - all the important elements of graphic design.

Part history, part primer, this book is a great general introduction to the basics of graphic design. The large number of illustrations are accompanied by ample explanation of why those illustrations or pictures were included and what purpose they have in the greater design lexicon.

The author clearly has a firm grasp on typography, space, symmetry (or lack thereof) and pacing and is able to get those things across in a manner that is both technical and accessible. If you've never read any design book, you won't find yourself confused by obscure, unexplained terminology.

You would expect a book about graphic design to be well designed and indeed, this book is well designed. The only gripe I have (hence the 4 stars, not 5) is the chapter that gets into the hardcore history of design, starting with cave paintings and Sumerian cuneiform. This chapter feels cluttered and a little overwhelming, but the amount of information (which is pretty staggering) is at the same time fascinating. As an historian and journalist by trade, this chapter was probably the most interesting to me simply to see the track of graphic design concepts throughout history.

Bottom line: Excellent first design book and a good resource to have on your shelf, even if you're a seasoned expert.

Fantastic coverage of the time of war

Fantastic coverage of the time of war, its affects on France and her people, and a look at part of the history that now defines us. World War II had profound effects on the generations that followed, wherever they were born, raised, or travelled. The insights, for me, into the thoughts and minds of the then-enemy Germans, was very enlightening. One could empathize, somewhat, with those drawn in but not totally committed. Difficult choices between culture, education, moral values, and duty. Excellent read!

Too big to get close to

Well, the big set piece scenes of the liberation of Paris are marvelous to watch, but because the sound seems dubbed in afterwards, the more intimate dialogue scenes rarely come off. It's a big moment in 20th century history, and I wouldn't want to have lived my life without seeing this movie, but if you want to get close to the French resistance, see Jean-Pierre Melville's "L'Arm�e des Ombres."

Great movie, lousy DVD

The movie is a classic, no doubt about that.

While the film's visual transfer to DVD is fine, even excellent, the audio and subtitles are horrible.

This is one of those unusual films which includes dialogue in both English and French. One wants, for example, to hear Glenn Ford speaking English. But the DVD offers *only* all English or all French, in other words, no original soundtrack.

Compounding the problem, the English subtitles were evidently written by someone who isn't a native speaker of either English or French, and who may not have even been watching the movie. Every other sentence is mistranslated. Times are altered. Names are altered. Odd sentences are added that aren't in the dialogue. It's just bizarre -- I've never seen anything like it.

So four and a half stars for the movie, but only two stars for the DVD transfer.

No it absolutely did not since I ordered a 12th edition and received basically a 1st edition. I needed it for my math class and ordered it in plenty of time. However, when I deceived it I had yo scramble and order another one and got the 11th edition until this could all be resolved. I returned the 1964 copy and am awaiting my correct copy!
Also since I had up give a star rating they got a 1 but if I had a real choice it would be none!

Another good chapter

Such a sweet story. This series is really building a great love story and the potential is great. But it really needs more depth. I understand the author may not want to write sex scenes, but it is unrealistic for an engaged couple to not even have conversations about intimate affairs. Their physical relationship seems lacking. Also things get mentioned and glossed over. For instance the situation with Ethan needed expanding, more info about why the Pandora film bothered Spencer would be helpful to developing a better plot and other things like that. This author had a lot of great ideas and sparks. She just needs to work with someone to develop them into a fire.

A Cosmetic Concern

This is not a review of the contents of Dr. Zeidler's book; I simply wish to question Springer-Verlag's choice of binding for Volume III in this projected series and bring a concern to the attention of prospective buyers.

The hardbound editions of Volumes I and II in this series were bound in identical (and attractive) covers and came clearly labeled as Quantum Field Theory I and Quantum Field Theory II on the spines. However, Volume III is bound in an entirely different style, and the identifying label on the spine is printed so differently from Volumes I and II that the third volume does not even appear to be part of the same series. As I said in the title of this review, this is indeed a "cosmetic" concern, but when one is investing several hundred dollars in an ambitious series like this, the least one can expect is continuity and coherence in the binding and cover design.

This issue will surely not deter any serious reader from purchasing this unique and ambitious series. However, one cannot detect the difference through online views of the books; I thought that prospective buyers should at least be aware of the problem. I now wonder what the future volumes in this series will look like.

Objectively bad.

Regardless of any subjective reasons for liking this book, there is an objective reason for rejecting it and sending it back to the author for revision. The problem lies in the notation used for change of variables. There is a standard notation for it, used by mathematicians and physicists alike. One may look at the wiki entry for "Tensor" for comparison. However, the author uses instead a non-standard one. This would not be a problem if the author's notation were an improvement, or at least as good as the standard, or even just a little bit worse, but it is not.

The problem can be first seen in eqn (0.35), page 24. Here we see what appears to be a distinction being made between two different dummy variables. However, that is not the meaning that the author intends. He means that the sum is invariant under a change of variables from x to x' = x'(x). In standard notation, the prime would be on the letter v and not on the index alpha. Delta needs to be carefully defined so that we know whether it is the partial with respect to x, or x'. As it is, it appears to be with respect to the alpha prime index on x, but in reality it is something quite different. This is not a typo as we see from the line just below the equation. Here we cannot fix things by removing the prime from the index alpha and placing it on the variable v for in doing so we would end up with three alpha indices on the right hand side of the equation rendering it meaningless. Moving down one more line we see primes on integer indices. One might wonder what 1', 2', 3' and 4' are meant to be. In fact they are, of course, 1, 2, 3, and 4. However, the notation using primes is forced on the author because without primes on the integers, he would be forced to place a prime on the x's (where they belong) and then to rewrite the lines above. When we get to chapter 8 where tensor analysis is discussed, the problem with the notation becomes a disaster. For instance, on page 442 in the equation following eqn (8.3), the author has forgotten to place the primes on the condition i = 1, . . . ,n. Ordinarily this would be just another in the mind-numbing array of typos with which the book is marred. But in this case, the placement of primes is crucial for understanding the notation. It gets worse on page 445 in the equation just below eqn (8.5) where the matrix G is defined in two different ways. The placement of primes on the indices is the only way to distinguish these two different matrices. Therefore, it is meaningless to ask what is the entry in the first column, second row of G. We must know whether we are talking about the G with a prime on the lower index, or the G with a prime in the upper index. For this reason, it becomes necessary for the author to place primes on integers as he does repeatedly in expressions like i' = 1', . . . , n' (without ever mentioning that n' = n) and even i' = 1', 2', 3'.

This notation prevents the author from presenting coordinate free equations because the primes are in the coordinates. This becomes apparent on page 496 where he finally has to admit in eqn (8.107) that one of his G matrices is actually the inverse of the other and in the equation just above (8.111) where he is finally forced to place the prime on the script A where it belongs.

To add insult to injury, he begins chapter 8 with the quote from Liebniz, "It is worth noting that notation facilitates discovery. This in a most wonderful way, reduces the mind's labor". My copy of the book is overloaded with margin notes where I have fixed up the equations. I was able to figure out what the author meant because I have studied tensor analysis in the past. If the reader is reading this material for the first time, I wonder at their ability to understand the book at all and applaud their willingness to burden their minds with such an increase in labor.
