About the Author

Laura Gurak�is Professor and Chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches courses in technical and professional communication, digital literacies, and communication research. She received an M.S. in Technical Communication and Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a recipient of the Society for Technical Communication’s Outstanding Article award. Prior to graduate school, Gurak worked as a technical writer for a number of companies; she continues to collaborate with workplace professionals through her department’s Industrial Affiliates Program. In addition to four textbooks, Gurak is author of two books from Yale University Press, co-editor of three edited collections, and author of many articles and commentaries.

John Lannon�is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he developed the undergraduate major in professional writing and co-developed the M.A. program in professional writing. He holds a B.S., M.A. & Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received an NDEA Fellowship and a Fulbright Lectureship. He worked four years in biomedical science and technology with the U.S. Air Force, and an additional three years in medical laboratories. In addition to five textbooks in business communication, rhetoric, and technical communication, he is author or coauthor of book reviews, environmental publications, scripted training, and instructional software. He has served as a communications and training consultant in business, government, and education.

I rated this okay but was disapointed to find out when my class began that I was suppose to buy the next revision, my instructor let me use this book but it made it hard because the chapters were off from the newer edition.

The growth of email and text messages, among other innovations, has made time management at work more of a challenge. Keeping up with all of this simultaneous communication can become counterproductive. Business coach Crenshaw (founder, Fresh Juice Strategy) addresses the myths about multitasking and argues that it can in fact cost valuable time to employees. Crenshaw frames his book in the form of a fictional case study: "Phil," a consultant, is about to meet with the manager of retail clothing chain "GreenGarb: Clothes Mother Nature Intended" about improving employees' time management skills. Crenshaw's point is that the notion of multitasking is a false construct that costs both time and money. In fact, employees are "switch tasking" (switching back and forth between two or more tasks). Crenshaw claims that "background tasking" (doing two or more tasks, with only one of them requiring mental effort) could be more efficient and effective. Currently, employees lose time owing to interruptions by coworkers, distractions from new technologies, lack of attention to colleagues when they are speaking, and juggling home and work. The author also provides exercises for employees to measure their efficiency and effective use of time. Bibliographic citations are included, but a glossary would have been helpful. Einstein was quoted as saying something like, "if you cannot explain it in simple terms, you do not know it well enough." I promise you Mr. Crenshaw knows his subject matter and explains it in story fashion and in simple yet so eloquently. My knowledge took a great leap with a short read.

Also, I highly advise this read for every manager and anyone like mean who is involved in process or performance improvement.

A quick, simple and worthwhile read

This is a simple little parable in the same vein as the One Minute Manager series. It is very quick and easy to read and has a couple of very practical activities. The thrust of the book is that while it is possible to switch between different tasks very quickly and give the illusion of multitasking, it is, in fact, a very inefficient strategy. What we are actually doing is switch tasking or background tasking.

No it is not a generational thing as our brain does not evolve that quickly and, sorry ladies, there is no evidence, other than urban myth anecdotal evidence, that women can multitask and men cannot. To do two things at once is to do both things poorly.

I always thought being a multi-tasker was something to be PROUD of - after reading this book - I'm ashamed of thinking that way - and now try to devote myself fully to the task at hand and not be distracted. I'm also fully aware of others who do this to me - and I find it irritating to say the least!!!

If you make more than one, buy a bunch of colored markers and make each theme, like winter clothing, tener expressions, etc a different color for easy cleanup of the clothespins. The next game I will make is the yarn board game. While this book is billed for K-8th, there are ideas even adults would enjoy.

A Must Read for any Healthcare Professional

The updated version of this book provides new insight into the development of medical products in changing times, where regulation now takes longer to pass through than development. This is really a beginners overview of the process, so if you work in the industry some of the chapters may seem a bit simple and lacking in content. Overall it is a great read for anyone (especially healthcare providers) that want to know more about how medical devices are regulated.

Finally, Someone gets it right!

I have been working in medical device design and design assurance for over 10 years. I have been having the fight and argument with management that "of course it is harder to do it right than not but your current approach has really not worked so well!!!

Elaine Whitmore really gets this right. The one paragraph that really got me ranting is on page 80: "A significant challenge for anyone working in product development in the healthcare field, especially with medical devices where stringent controls and requirements are a relatively new issue, is overcoming a bad attitude." "...The point is that quality regulations are not going to go away, and those responsible for healthcare product development will have to lead the charge to keep up the momentum in their organizations."

I am going to have to buy several copies of this for my clients!

Essential guide for medical product management, investors, scientists and engineers

Dr. Whitmore exposes a raw nerve too long protected by the bubble that has been the biotech boom of the last 20 or so years. In her opening salvo she observes "there is no lack of innovation or shortage of important scientific discoveries in this country, but our ability to transform scientific advances into new and effective medical products has been disappointing."

In attempting to pinpoint the reason for the gap between expectations and actual productivity, Dr. Whitmore rounds up the usual suspects of outdated clinical trial models, and an inefficient system of regulation, but reserves the focus of her scrutiny on the way in which investment money is spent and in the product development process itself.

The days when Big Pharma or Big Device companies funded their own internal R&D have dwindled, the mammoths now choosing for the most part to outsource their innovation and early stage product development to a larger, more diverse pool of start-ups whose investors assume much of the risk. Although this system provides the opportunity for more innovation in small companies unconstrained by Big Pharma bureaucracy, the focus of risk imposes pressures on the start-up either to cut corners or to abandon prematurely perfectly good avenues of innovation.

There has to be a better way.

Invoking the term "Translational Research", i.e. the methods used to accelerate the path of a scientific discovery from the bench to the patient, Dr. Whitmore dissects the entire process, charting the path needed to ensure success and, more importantly needed to avoid the "Valley of Death", that graveyard of innovations that have failed to implant, gestate or deliver.

Dr. Whitmore's subtext is that there are no shortcuts, but there are smarter ways to navigate the path to success. Her guidebook not only provides beacons for the scientist, engineer or innovator, but a guidebook for investors and management who can better understand the challenges and more appropriately balance their risks and expectations.

The style is clear and concise and achieves its goal of helping to "provide a shared foundation from which cross-functional participants...can negotiate the product development labyrinth and accomplish the goal of providing both groundbreaking and iterative new medical products."

Should be required reading for anyone in the industry.

Stunning and Scholarly Book about Kantha Embroidery

This is a very beautiful and interesting book about kantha, embroidered quilts from Bengal, that were collected by Stella Kramrisch and Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz and then donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The large format book was published in conjunction with an exhibit of the quilts at the museum from December 2009-July 2010. One can only hope that the exhibit will travel, for these embroidered quilts that originated in the recycling of used family garments display great originality and remarkable technical skill. The items collected by Kramrisch and the Bonovitzes were mostly done on white cotton using colored cotton thread that was pulled from other garments. The simple running stitch was used to create background texture and was combined with other stitches that were used for patterning. The motifs used were derived from ritual art practiced by the populations of the area, and were often interpreted with original and whimsical styling. Indeed, one of the most striking characteristics of the kantha presented in this book is the artistic ingenuity of their makers in the idiosyncratic presentation of design motifs.

There are seven scholarly essays to accompany the presentation of the collection, but the book's greatest draw is the photographs of each of the quilts from the two collections. Though most of these objects share the same layout of a central motif and surrounding panels, every single one of the quilts is original in the makers' interpretations of what should be done with the space. These photographs are exquisite and are large enough and detailed enough to do justice to these original works of art. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in embroidery and textile art.

A brilliant, decisive compilation of all that is Kantha. It is historical, descriptive, thorough - and a delight with many, many pictures, photographs and close-ups of Kantha work throughout the centuries. One of the best books I have bought for many years.
