How to meet your new job

There are many books out there about how to survive a MBA program. Books giving advice about how to crack a job interview are a dime a dozen. However, none spend the time to take you through a MBA candidate’s thought process every step of the way.

The author does just that by laying out his true, raw emotions through every leg of his journey. His style is straightforward, engaging, and extremely insightful. As a reader, I felt like I was right there standing next to him, experiencing the roller coaster of struggles and triumphs in his job search.

While the strength of the book lies in the many relatable anecdotes and the emotional aspect, Kevin also provides many valuable frameworks on how to approach networking and what to consider in selecting the best job for yourself.

Even though this book is targeted toward MBA students or prospectives searching for off-campus jobs, I highly recommend this for any graduate student embarking on a job search, on-campus or off-campus. Get ready to step into Kevin’s shoes and learn from his experiences!

Great niche book for MBA job seeker

This book of anecdotes is great for the MBA finding post graduation work. Although some basic principles of job searching exist universally (network, research company, etc.), certain types are different. Although most reputable MBA programs have on-campus events, this book was good for understanding other options. I recommend for incoming, current or recently graduated MBAs seeking opportunities.

A great variety

My daughter uses this book for extra math practice. As you work your way through, the problems progressively become more difficult. I love how each day has a mixture of different types of math problems; some are simple and some are more complex. It keeps my daughter from becoming easily bored and/or frustrated.

I build and install custom cabinets and this is a good reference book for standard practices. I have used it as a study guide and reference for new employees. Some of the methods in the book are not exactly as I was taught long ago but it is definitely a solid resource.

Extremely good book for the newcomer to cabinetry

I'm new to cabinet-building but experienced enough in carpentry. This was an extremely useful book for me, I've never done pocket hole screws or done biscuit joining before and my first standard kitchen cabinet was by far a solid success story. They cover all the basics from standard kitchen cabinet-making, to pantry cabinets, to non-standard cabinets like corner cabinets with detailed outside faces. I'm currently redoing an entire kitchen from scratch and I'm using the book extensively. I haven't done the doors yet, but they've got some extremely nice looking door plans in place.

Covers general guides for planing and joining to make your own butcher block countertops, a number of different side-facing and detailed routing plans for both doors and out-facing cabinet sides. Detailed corner cabinet build plan. They don't go into detail on how to do biscuit joinery, but that took me a 5 minute guide on youtube and I was good to go. Aside from buying the pocket screw kit and the biscuit joiner, I'm spending roughly 100 dollars in materials and something like 6-8 hours per cabinet to build the two standard oak 36 inch base cabinets I've done. I'm picky on my own work but I think they look great.

Some of this would be old hat to a guy who's done a lot of cabinets and I'm sure they'd be using staples somewhere where this guy uses screws, pocket screws and biscuit joining 95% of the time but I appreciate something that's going to last a long time if put together well.

I've read through a few cabinet books before and generally they'd be very general in nature

There are many books out there on cab building, and variations / styles to the design & process.

Udo's approach is solid, flexible, and is presented in an outstanding fashion, and lots of photos

Add Gregory Paolini's "Building Kitchen Cabinets Made Simple" " book / DVD and you'll have a solid beginning foundation to possibly a whole new career in cabinet building!

About the Author
As a staff journalist early in his career he worked on magazines in various editorial posts including Chief Subeditor and Assistant Editor on Country Life. As a London-based freelance he concentrated on articles on the arts, interviews and reviews for various newspapers, including The Times and The Guardian, and for various magazine, including the Radio Times and other weeklies.While working in Bogota, Colombia (1971-75) as Coordinator of Studies in the English Department of the School of Translation and Interpreting, Rosario University, his journalism included work as a foreign correspondent (stringer) for The Sunday Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek and the Buenos Aires Herald. He founded, directed and presented a weekly half-hour programme in Spanish called Encuentros Culturales (Cultural Encounters), for a radio station, Emisora Mariana de Bogota. For this he interviewed ambassadors and businessmen from various countries.During 1975-76 in Madrid he wrote for McGraw-Hill Publications and the Adelaide Advertiser, among other publications. He wrote a weekly column, Inside Spain, for the Manchester Evening News.Lecturing and training include giving private tuition in English and essay writing skills through to university level; heading the English Department of the Haile Selassie I day School, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (1955-57); giving various writing skills courses to professionals; and lecturing in English Language and Literature for the British Council in Milan (1955-57), at the Rosario University, Bogota, and in Madrid.As a trainer in journalism he was Director of Studies at the College of Journalism in London from 1976 to 1987, and lecturer in feature writing at universities in London, including the University of Westminster postgraduate programme in Journalism Studies (1987-00). In 1987 he established the Brendan Hennessy consultancy, providing training in journalism and writing skills training for business organisations. From 1995 he has concentrated on this and on

Dated, patronising, clumsy

Some 160 pages into Hennessy's mag op, I am seized ever-more violently by the urge to lob it into a nearby wall.

Despite the supposed revision in 2006 the book is now heavily dated. The brief, rather patronising consideration he gives to the internet (uppercased as 'The Internet') says it all: fusty, outmoded, potentially still hankering after moveable-type. As you'd imagine, his patter about 'meta-search engines' and 'internet directories' is useless.

Where it hasn't dated, Hennessy retains a rare gift for stating the terminally obvious. The whole book seems to be a litany of the sort of axioms that one only need be a sentient human being - not a seasoned feature writer - to grasp (like 'ask creative questions'; 'be precise when pitching by telephone'). It's all then hacked together in Hennessy's inimitably humourless, dry-as-dust style. He uses irritatingly folksy made-up case studies which are again mainly facets of common-sense, to the extent that the overall feel is one of heavy padding: paragraphs could be condensed into lines, chapters into pages. Fatally, he has tried to be 'thorough', perhaps more pointedly, 'methodical' in surveying the subject, but that approach has merely translated into being boring and long-winded.

Every sentence is a tedious battle to the end.

A must-have resource for writers

This is the best book I have found for practical guidance on developing feature articles and marketing them to a wide variety of publications; the author presents information in a way that is easy to follow and a pleasure to read. Excellent resource!
