NORTON CRITICAL EDITIONS: WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: HAMLET, HOY
By Ralph Gamez
NORTON CRITICAL EDITIONS: WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: HAMLET, Edited by CYRUS HOY, 1963.

Everyone who studies literature in our local high schools or colleges or universities studies HAMLET, at least to some degree. Cyrus Hoy has given us readers much more than just the text of Shakespeare's greatest work in the English language. Cyrus's edition is specifically orientated to the scholar, those of us who desire in depth knowledge about the thinking of Shakespeare. Cyrus presents to the reader, "An Authoritative Text" based on the second quarto published in 1604-5. "Since there is good reason to suppose that the second quarto was printed from Shakespeare's own manuscript [As to date no authentic Shakespeare play has ever been discovered.], its authority is very high, and I have adhered to it closely, but not slavishly."

Hoy further explains, "An editor approaches his task [a critical analysis] with a proper awe [that's what we should all have] which is the more profound from his steady realization that he is, after all, dealing with the most celebrated work in English literature." He say that a lot better than I could, trust me! Cyrus informs the reader that his edition has modern spelling, with explanations and notes. Everything for a scholarly work

Cyrus's edition covers a lot of issues that only a real scholar would appreciate, critical commentary as t'were from writers, "Ranging in time from the early eighteenth century to the present." Writers: Samuel Johnson, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, T.S. Eliot, C.S. Lewis and more, contribute their observations and comments concerning, specifically, four subjects well entwined throughout Hamlet, Melancholy: one of Prince Hamlet's problems; Demonology: What was the thinking at the time Shakespeare was writing his play? (This is a time when people were being roasted alive for witchcraft!); The nature of man: What kind of man was Hamlet? Is he a hero or demon? C'mon, everyone around him dies! And the others? Certainly Claudius does well as King! And finally we look at Death, something that is quite profound and like an "unweeded garden" found everywhere throughout the play. Shakespeare's Hamlet is all about death. "Questions concerning the nature of man, and the nature of death, carry us to the heart of the play."

All of this reflects on the MEANING, which Cyrus says is critical to really understanding Hamlet-the-man and Hamlet the play. "The selection of critical commentary contained in the present volume is designed to put before the reader at least the more significant of the multifarious opinions and attitudes to which the tragedy of Hamlet has given rise over the past two and a half centuries." Cyrus also treats us readers with the history of the play; it did not originate in Shakespeare's mind, but as all of his plays are a "reworked" effort.

Cyrus adds, "...the best recent criticism has stressed the need to look beyond the character of the Prince and to view the play in its totality. Modern criticism of Shakespeare's plays has also drawn attention to the need to see them in the context of the moral and intellectual assumptions and attitudes that were current when they were composed." How profound a statement. What else could a Shakespeare Scholar want? You may find out that our so called "hero" is nothing more than a villain, that Hamlet cares about no one but himself and finds fault with everyone and everything. Look at the way he treats our sweet-poor-saint Ophelia! Shoot, if I were Laertes Hamlet would die a lot sooner...but then we would not have our play would we! Kinda depressing but still brilliant.

Cyrus's edition makes us think. We look carefully and find that Shakespeare had a lot more hats on than we had originally thought. It appears that he was not only an expert in religion, history, martial arts, law and much more, it appears he was also a psychiatrist; or was he. I'm still working on the simple notion of how could his audience appreciate or even understand to a small degree his plays when the average vocabulary of people in his time stood at around five hundred words. Cyrus's edition spurns endless thoughts on the centuries old enigma (at least in my case): Who was Shakespeare? Was he really the son of the glove maker from Stratford-on-Avon? The same guy who it appears could not even write his name? I recommend Cyrus's edition without reserve.
