In this delightful book, Lazzaro presents a solid discussion of gardens that have been cultivated for over 500 years. In the first six chapters she covers the idea of the garden and its physical and philosophical representation, including reconstruction based on renderings, ornamentation such as stone sculpture, structured designs, natural design, and the synthesis between art and nature. The final four chapters are devoted to individual gardens and cover the Castello, the Boboli, the Villa D'Este, and the Lante Bagnaia. Those who have traveled to Italy will appreciate most the photographs by Lieberman, which reveal the geometry of the plantings and the symmetry of their arrangement in 190 black-and-white illustrations and 80 color plates. This well-planned book will serve the scholar of Renaissance culture as well as the home gardener looking for ideas. Highly recommended.

Stunning and

"Gardens in Italy in the late 15th and 16th centuries are presented in the context of contemporary ideas of nature and the interactions of human culture with the natural world."
Thus, what we have here is a book that celebrates the aesthetic beauty of some of the greatest "natural" spaces ever created while providing substantial and fascinating perspectives on what nature meant to Italians in the beginning of modernity. Lazarro explains with great detail how Renaissance gardens were formed in order to celebrate nature as both ordered and wild: the plants selected, the arrangement of the plants, the use of ornament, the role of architecture, and many of the design triumphs in topiary, grottoes, and even labyrinths. She also discusses the differences between geometric gardens (highly organized, not for the common folk) with public spaces of parks, while tying in the architecture, sculpture and fountains of central Italy. This is an enormous accomplishment.
This is a book of great beauty.
