Samantha is holed up all alone in her apartment, trying to outlast the zombie apocalypse. Good read

This is a good book and has a lot of promise. I will be reading the next one. The only problem I have with books that are written in a series is that it is usually so long between books that I tend to forget what is going on and have to go back and read the end of the last book to catch back up.

A Bit Awkward, but Overall Good

Zombie Island is about what happens after a zombie virus infects the world and what one girl goes through to survive it. It is told in a first person point of view that was very awkward at first. As the story goes on it gets much more comfortable and easy to follow. There were some spelling and grammatical issues, but it was still a good story overall.
Samantha, or Sam as she goes by, is a girl who has been surviving on her own for 6 months after the zombie virus hits. She is careful when she goes to look for supplies and even has a garden going on the roof of her building. On a trip into town for supplies she is attacked by the Zombie Warriors, a group of men that are basically horrible individuals. She is then rescued by a team of brothers, Reese and Ryder. They pick up another girl, Tobe along the way out of town and away from the Warriors. Sam keeps it together and it's not until later that she basically breaks down. She lets her typical girl insecurities take control of her. Also, she is constantly flipping back and forth between the two brothers and which one she likes better.
Ryder and Reese are some tough guys. Ryder is more of the dick and more closed off. Reese is the nice one who is trying to help others regardless. They basically keep the group alive for most of the story. Tobe was definitely damaged, but it was understandable why she had issues.
The zombies were true to lore. They were gruesome and mindless. They wrecked havoc on the group and definitely killed quite a few people. It was vivid and realistic which is refreshing when most "monsters" get romanticized. The ending was kind of corny, but tied up loose ends while leaving it open for interpretation on what happens next.

Could've been worse

The story is alright, but the characters were cookie-cutters and they needed a lot more depth to them. There were some attempts to try and flesh out the characters, but overall the attempts fell a little short because they just perpetuated the "cookie-cutter" personalities even more.
As much as I wanted to enjoy the zombie story, it just didn't have enough originality to make it an interesting read. A lot of the plot ideas are just re-hashed scenes from zombie flicks and the story borders on cliche. Some scenes just don't make any logical sense and overall the plotting needed a lot of work. I would have given the story a star or two more if there was more originality in the plot and characters.
The writing wasn't bad, I liked the author's voice and the story had a nice flow to it, but again, I felt there was a lack of creative control in the storytelling as well as the characters and plot.
If you want a run-of-the-mill zombie story, then sure, give this a go.
But if you're looking for something more on the original side, maybe elsewhere.
