About the Author
Keith F. Faherty chaired the American Society of Civil Engineers' National Committee for Wood for three years. He is professor of civil engineering at Marquette University and has both a master's and a Ph.D. in structural engineering. Thomas G. Williamson is executive vice president of American Plywood Associations and American Wood Systems and plays a leading role nationally in the development of standards for engineered timber structures.

Wood Engineeringn and Construction Handbook

This book provides the details one needs to know before building structures from wood. It is not just a matter of buying some boards and nailing them together. There is math formulas, logistics, physics, and a host of other sciences involved. Once you have your loads calculated then there is the matter of fastening pieces of wood together. But perhaps first you need to bend the wood. All of these details and many more are contained in this volume.

Carpenters should be particularly interested in this, but also the do-it-yourselfer. Having this volume on hand will allow the builder to understand what is needed to know before the project begins.

This book is one of the best on the subject, but it definitely needs to be updated! Check out "The Encyclopedia of Wood" from the USDA to get a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to wood.

Independence day

While at work this morning, I was shown an original birth certificate issued in Israel in 1950. I actually felt something of a thrill of pride (even though I've never been there, and I've long since forgotten Hebrew letters). That's mostly due to my having finished "Exodus" last night.
"Exodus" isn't the kind of book you read for literary merit. The third word in the book is "plip-plopped", which isn't a word at all. If you're deconstructing page 1, you'll get annoyed the random shifts in the narrative voice. The book begins with a couple of plodding middle-American characters with silly names like "Kitty", and "Mark Parker".
However, Uris knows what he's doing. He's constructing an argument in favor of the state of Israel, laid out against 70 years' worth rampant European anti-Semitism. It's no coincidence that the first segment recounts the Holocaust (first, in the eyes of a girl who escaped to relative peace in Jew-friendly Denmark, and then in the eyes of an Auschwitz survivor), and then the second shows the seeds of modern Israel through a pair of mythic-quality Russian shtetl refugees who enter Palestine in the 1880s and begin transforming the soil. The balance of the book shows Palestine's struggles under the suffocating British mandate, and nascent Israel's miraculous victory over the various Arab states seeking to "push Israel into the sea". Played out over the epic history is a storyline involving the Ben Canaan family, Kitty the American nurse, her surrogate Israeli daughter Karen, and Karen's sullen, rebellious, Sal Mineo-type boyfriend Dov. The body count rises and the deaths become more personal, more tragic, as the story builds its way slowly to several shattering conclusions.
A lot has changed since 1948. Israel was then associated with the political left; not anymore. The plight of the Palestine Arabs who were induced out of their land by the warfaring Arab states, however, has not been resolved. Those refugees are still right there, crammed along the Israeli borders in the same makeshift cities. Pages 551-554 of the book present a summary of this unconscionable situation, and just about every word is still true, 50 years later. The joyously pro-Israel strains of "Exodus" will probably now draw more cynicism than solidarity, in this brave new world of the New York Times headlines and Saudi peace proposals. However, I wouldn't change a word.

Into The Promised Land

Leon Uris (1924-2003) was a well-respected novelist and the author of several screenplays--but it was not until the 1958 publication of EXODUS that he became one of America's most popular writers. Sales in the United States were phenomenal, and by the early 1960s EXODUS had been translated into some fifty languages. It would become one of the most widely published and widely read novels of the 20th Century.

The novel was extremely topical, for it dealt with the creation of modern-day Israel, a highly controversial event--and one well within the memory of most adult readers of the late 1950s and early 1960s. But Uris did more than this: he also painted a general history of European anti-Semitism with an emphasis on the Holocaust. For many readers, EXODUS would be their first encounter with such material, and Uris took nothing for granted in his descriptions and accounts.

The great strength of the novel is its narrative power. The primary action follows a group of post-war European Jews held by the British for their illegal attempt to enter British-dominated Palestine--and their determination to break British policy--but it also flashes back to the tell the histories of the characters involved. These histories, which reveal both Nazi atrocity and the long history of anti-Semitism, are often even more compelling than the primary story line itself. It is very much a page-turner from start to finish.

Even so, EXODUS doesn't quite manage to make the leap from 1950s pop fiction to the level of masterpiece, and it remains very much of its time. Uris is an extremely literal writer, and he is less interested in creating plot and character than he is in using both to present a sort of "headline" history of anti-Semitism and the birth of Israel. Consequently, both his style and his characters--although we certainly learn a tremendous amount about their experiences--read as rather flat.

The novel is also somewhat controversial, for it is written from an extremely Zionist position, and for Uris this position is fundamental to all else. Half a century later, however, it is very evident that the matter was never as simple as Uris would have us believe. There are more than a few passages that will cause modern readers to think "But it didn't turn out that way, did it?" And some readers may consider the novel as anti-British and anti-Arabian as the anti-Semitism the book so loudly decries.

Even with these issues, EXODUS is a powerful novel--and in a historical sense a very important work, for it would influence American thinking on the subject of Zionism and Israel for decades to come. And when all is said and done, it's still one helluva read. Recommended.

Religious, Historical, Touching and Informative

Shalom. The 'Exodus' was my first Leon Uris' book and definately won't be my last! The book is an unfolding story that is full of fact, drama, romance, action, religion and skillfully inter-woven fiction. From a Jewish perspective, the book accurately documents Jewish persecution and is a wonderful book that educates people about the struggle of the Jews through history and the struggle of Eretz Israel. From an historical point of view, the book is somewhat accurate. The book illuminates the actions of the nations involved accurately. Yes, the British and the Arabs are portrayed as sly and anti-semetic, but this may be the truth in this case. Uris is only highlighting events and actions - if they make the people look evil or horrific then maybe that is the truth about their actions? Most of the events are facts - we have to face them. The book is an amazing work of literature. The story is so vivid, that one feels as though they themselves are present at the time of the events and are part of the action. The way in which the book is written make you feel as though you are very close to the characters and you begin to feel that the tragedies that they experience and have experienced have happened to you as well. The story was truly gripping. I could not put the book down and was drawn into the world of the 'Exodus'. I was saddened when I finally finished the book and wished that it would contiue with the story. I think that every single person in the world should read this book. It really does affect you and makes you realize just what people will do and just how they will sacrifice their own lives for the cause of their people. It also historically educates you and learnt a lot from the book. I now want nothing less than to travel to Eretz Israel and to see Gan Dafna, the Acre Jail in from which Akiva and Dov were freed! I now want to see the Biblical sights that the characters talked about. It seems that people who have read this book feel the spirit of its story and characters with them forever! I have to agree, a truly unique and special book! Alana from Durban

Any book that can give voice to the voiceless should be celebrated. No one feels this more strongly than Wally Lamb, editor of Couldn't Keep It to Myself, a collection of stories by 11 women imprisoned in the York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. Teacher and novelist Lamb was invited to head a writing workshop at York Correctional Institution in 1999. His somewhat reluctant acceptance soon turned into steadfast advocacy once the women in his charge began to tell their stories. Lamb maintains that there are things we need to know about prison and prisoners: "There are misconceptions to be abandoned, biases to be dropped." However, as heartfelt as his appeal is, nothing speaks more convincingly in this book than the stories themselves.

Those collected here are disturbing and horrific. They reveal, often in graphic detail, the worst kind of abuse: incest, drug addiction, spousal violence, parental neglect, or incompetence. They're also testimony to what social workers and health care professionals have confirmed for years--that those who populate our prisons are often victims first themselves. Thus, the telling of these stories serves as a form of therapy. They are also sad accounts of the brutalities many suffer, yet few discuss: "One day I figured out a dying little girl lived inside of me, so I threw her a lifeline in the form of paper and pen." You Will be Totally Caught Up in these Incredible Stories

As a reader interested in women's issues I expected to like this book, but I did not expect to be completely captivated and overcome by it, which is what actually happened. It is presented in such a compelling way you become absorbed by each inmate's story and exeriences. It is at the same time heart wrenching and informative. Some common threads run through the individual stories yet each is so unique you feel the pain of each individual story. Photographs of each writer, both past and present, help to make you feel a connection. I gained insight into cultures and lifestyles I knew nothing about and saw a part of life so realistically described that I felt I had been there myself. Wally Lamb did an extraordinary job putting this project together and the result is a book that I feel will benefit everyone and should be read by all.

Inmates are people first, prisoners second

This book has already caused a stir for all the wrong reasons. Various victims' rights groups have taken issue with this book for the following reasons: (a) that Wally Lamb would devote his time to, of all things, a group of criminals; and (b) that the stories in this book humanize their writers rather than focuses on the victims of their crimes. It is undisputed that the women who wrote these memoirs did a variety of illegal, immoral and awful things. However, if you read these stories, you will begin to wonder who the victims really are.
The women's stories are uniformly heartbreaking; nearly all the authors were victims of sexual abuse. Nearly all grew up poor. Nearly all had minimal or questionable parental support. And about half wrote about abusive romantic relationships. Several of the authors are in prison for killing their abusive spouse and/or significant other. While it was wrong for them to take their husband's lives, it is also understandable once you read their harrowing tales.
I was especially moved by Bonnie Foreshaw's "Faith, Power and Pants" and Diane Bartholomew's "Snapshots of my former life." Both went from unbearable childhoods to atrocious marriages. Both are clearly angry with a system that has failed them. Yet both write of finding hope despite all the indignities life has thrown at them. As a final indignity, Bartholomew developed cancer while writing her memoir. Only then was she paroled for the murder of her abusive husband. It is clear that she was only paroled because the State of Connecticutt did not want to pay her chemotherapy bills.
This book can be harrowing to read but it left me with a sense of hope. Beautiful women exist underneath the prison fatigues, who have survived despite the brutal conditions of the penitentiary system. Each story in this collection moved me in a different way. I can say that about very few books.

Wally Lamb is brilliant as an editor too

I bought this book so I could read what a woman from my own community wrote. I expected to get through only her story the night I brought the book home with me. I'd already read other writings of hers, so I figured this woman's story would be a good read, which it was. After reading that one story, however, I read Mr. Lamb's intro - then I just couldn't stop reading. I read the entire book in one sitting!
In the past, especially being a social worker, I've read many stories about every possible life situation, but I have never read anything like this book. By the end of each story I felt a real sense of kinship and sisterhood with that story's author. I find it impossible to choose which is the most thought-provoking or well-written.
If this book is typical of Wally Lamb's ability to teach and to give of his heart, then I believe he is not only brilliant but the kind of mentor other incarcerated people need working with them. Thank goodness they couldn't keep it to themselves!

El Capitan de la poesie latina

This bilingual collection of Nerudas poetry is an outstanding selection. Neruda is the great one of Latin American poetry. New Directions has for years provided us with quality bilingual collections of great world poets. Plenos Poderes (Fully Empowered) is another classic. Neruda continuously made impassioned pleas for his people. He was a great lover of his land and his people. He was a true revolutionary poet in the vein of Lorca. This collection was published in 1962 (nine years before he was justly awarded the Nobel Prize.) Here Neruda states his mission in a poem like The Poets Obligation: He will give voice to those who have no voice. He will speak for the downtrodden. The imagery of the sea is scintillating. The poem Fully Empowered also backs this stand. But amid the political stuff there are some beautiful lyric poems as well. To Sorrow is a gorgeous poem. Short pieces like It is Born reflect a deeply sensitive poet. This is classic Neruda. Viva Pablo Neruda!

Another poetic triumph by Neruda

"Fully Empowered" is an outstanding volume of poetry by Pablo Neruda of Chile. The book has been translated into English by Alastair Reid, and is presented in a bilingual format, with the Spanish originals and English versions on facing pages.
Overall, I found Neruda's voice in this book to echo that of United States poet Walt Whitman (who could be seen as one of Neruda's 19th century poetic "ancestors"). Neruda's attentive poetic eye looks at both humanity and nature with reverence and compassion. His voice is often very tender. Like Whitman did in his work, Neruda often writes in the first person in this book.
Some of the most memorable selections in this book include "To Don Asterio Alarcon, Clocksmith of Valparaiso," in which Neruda finds dignity and transcendence in the work of the title figure; "Thistle," in which he celebrates "the blue thistle of Chile"; and "The People," a passionate tribute to all the working people of the world.
In "Summary," Neruda writes, ". . . my life was always / singing its way between joy and obligation." "Fully Empowered" marvelously embodies both Neruda's sense of moral duty and the joy that proceeds from his life's work.

Was a relationship with a German emblematic of female collaboration and betrayal, or were contemporary feelings of violence towards the enemy subsequently re-directed? Answering these questions and many more, Virgili suggests that the punishment was not only meted out for 'horizontal collaboration' but also for many other forms of involvement, and that the act of shaving the head was itself a form of sexual punishment. For Virgili, the public nature of the punishment was a defence strategy, a response to the German Occupation and a reaction to the suffering and violence that had preceded the Liberation.

This pioneering investigation of one of France's darkest moments will be fascinating reading for anyone interested in World War II, French history or women's studies.

Interesting but Lacking

The author is a modern feminist. She (I'm presuming it is a she) loves to complain about how horrible this punishment was. The shaving of women's heads was a punishment for collaboration with the enemy - usually horizontal comfort. The author fails to consider the fact that the penalty for collaboration with the enemy was often death. Compared to the death penalty, shaving a woman's head, which was only a temporary thing, seems extremely trivial.

It is also interesting to see no explanation of why shaving a woman's head was considered so shameful - or in the author's opinion - or where the idea came from. Maybe it came from 1 Corinthians 11.

There are certainly some interesting facts, but it is way too drawn out and too slanted. The shaving of the head seems to me to be a rather lenient punishment for the crime.

How do you find the emotional core of a scene and then sustain it night after night or take after take? This terrific book gives a clear, concise, easy-to-follow blueprint to infuse genuine feeling feeling into your work and then recreate it in a dependable way. To some these techniques may seem like child's play, and they are, in a very profound sense, with a sound scientific basis. I believe any actor, whether novice or expert, who practices these techniques will become a better, more confident performer.

What a terrific book! Any actor, would-be actor, or friend of an actor looking for an excellent book on the craft should snap this one up. New ways of looking at acting are difficult to find. Nike Flacks' experience as both a trained therapist and a superb actor give her unique insights into acting and emotion not addressed anywhere else. If you can't make it to New York, London, or Paris for one of her workshops this book is the next best thing to help you act with passion.

I didn't even get this book for acting. I got it as a method of getting in touch with my own feelings. She's wonderful and helpful on that front., I would imagine actors would find her indispensable.
