Jane, by Michelle N. Onuorah

Orphaned. Neglected. Hurt and abused. Jane Daugherty has survived what can only be described as the childhood from hell. After years of mental, physical, and sexual abuse, she has become a fiercely independent young woman - closed off from human connection. Unable to trust people or their ability to be kind, she has vowed to build a new life for herself so that she never has to rely on others again. At 24-years-old, she is fulfilling this vow, successfully working as the youngest tenure-track professor at the University of New York. Brilliant and remarkably accomplished, Jane's life takes an unexpected turn when she is reunited with the childhood friend she protected in foster care. Alexa Masterson introduces Jane to the family that adopted her, a family that includes her older brother, Aiden Masterson. Instantly drawn to each other, Aiden and Jane embark on a relationship that will either destroy them both or shape them into the man and woman they were always meant to be. Can what started as lust transform into love? And what will bring about the transformation that they ultimately need? **Please note there is occasional cursing, mild violence, and unapologetic references to sexuality and spirituality within this work of fiction. Reader discretion is advised.**

Heavy, But Worthy Read
By Kindle Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I finished it in less than a day and I couldn't wait to put it down... I'll get to why in a little later. Jane is extremely well written and full of uncomfortable moments. When we meet the title character, she is on to the outside world an over achieving phenom. On the inside, however, she is on auto pilot. Over worked, in physical and mental pain, and in need of an intervention in the worst way. Through a series of events she meets up with a woman she once loved like a sister, Alexa. Their friendship and kinship is renewed and starts Jane down a path that ultimately changes her life forever. She begins a whirlwind, minefield of a romance with Alexa's adopted brother Aiden and develops a friendship with their parents. The way I am explaining it feels overly simple... it's not but Michelle N. Onuorah does a great job of showing how seemingly innocuous actions can add up to momentous change. They all get help from a likely but unlikely source: God. Very little in life is really left to chance and by bringing Jane and Alexa back together, God brings Jane and Aiden to Him. They all get an HEA, but they have to earn it. Boy, do they have to earn it.

The romance was so much fun. The dichotimy between Jane and Aiden was interesting in that men are so rarely shown as emotional- that is emotion not tied to anger and lust- or introspective in romantic fiction. Him being the one constantly looking for reassurance and her being the stoic, hard to read one was used to show their personalities in a surprisingly effective way. I not only understood why they fell in love but I understood why it might not have worked out. Aiden was passiotate and determined. He spoke before thinking and was naive. Jane was strong and honest. She was also closed off and stubborn. Without a little divine intervention, these two would never have stayed the course.

The friendship between Alexa and Jane also added to my enjoyment of this book. Alexa's loyalty to and unwavering love for Jane (and vice versa) was a balm at times. They both got by with a little help from their best friend. Rare in romance and so, so necessary.

Having written all of that, Jane was a difficult read for me. First, I usually avoid super angsty books and I have grown weary of physical/sexual abuse as a way to give female characters depth. I can accept both when well written because every good romance needs tension and sex crimes are unfortunately something that a large number of women will have to deal with at some point in their lives. Romance is escapism and the slow reveal of Jane's past abuse was nearly visceral for me. Second, I have a good deal of history with the U.S. Foster Care system. I have known some excellent and horrid Foster parents. The things that Jane experienced are not the norm, but I can say with a heavy heart they could and do happen. While I would read this again, it will be a long while.

Touchy subject but I have to add... From the disclaimer you know the book deals with spirituality. Onuorah is unabashedly a Christian (love that!). I like that her stories can reflect her beliefs without every character becoming a lemming and them being forced to live in some Utopian sing-a-long. This book is full of what I would call home truths that I appreciate, but I think it might end up mistaken as judge-y. I don't see that as her intention and I think a non believer can enjoy this book without feeling collection plate pressure, lol.

Jane is a five star, worth my time read. I am glad I read it and I look forward to the author continuing to share her talent and creativity with the world!

I received an ARC to read and review. As always, that promised nothing but my time!

So, I am not a Christian
By Amazon Customer
Actually, I am reluctant to place any labels on myself. Although I was raised and educated within the institution of Christianity, suffice it to say that I do not now or for the past 25 years subscribe to any religion or faith. However, like the Masterson parents I believe I am a good person and probably live my life with many of the values taught in the Judeo-Christian doctrines. Having said all of that I have to say that I was incredibly moved by this novel, often to the point of tears. And I'm not talking of delicate tracks coursing down my cheeks, but gut wrenching, soul shaking sobs. I cried because Jane's story is my story and seeing my thoughts and emotions laid bare was overwhelming.

Full, disclosure, I was not raised in the foster care system. In fact I have two loving parents who are still married but that did not protect me from being molested and raped as a young girl, and later being in relationships that hurt me to the core. So just like Jane I shut down and shut out everything and every one that had the potential to cause me pain. Reading this story made me realize that in doing this I also shut out any potential for joy, and love, and community in my life. And that I have whittled my life down to my work and my books, a very lonely existence indeed. I am sure that intellectually I knew this all along but I never really knew it until today.

Normally I don't like Christian romance. They often feel preachy and sanctimonious, and I don't want to be preached to when I am trying to enjoy a book. And even though I enjoyed this book tremendously and was incredibly moved by the sermons within I will not be running out to join a congregation anytime soon. But I respect and believe Jane's spiritual journey, and traveling it with her was cathartic and significant to this non- Christian.

By Amazon Customer
This book – and quite frankly the author – was too judgmental for my taste. And for me that reaction simply took away from the book and the characters. I was very disappointed because the book started off strong even though the subject matter truly was difficult and heart wrenching. I finished the book because I was already heavily invested by then – and maybe that’s what the writer was hoping of the reader in order to get her beliefs across – but really I felt cheated and wished I could get my money back. I like learning new things and others’ point-of-views but find it’s offending when others try to impose their beliefs on me. That’s what reading this book felt like, a bit preachy and sanctimonious a lot of times. Frankly everyone is entitled to their opinions and beliefs but I feel a writer should be respectful of his/her readers – not everyone will share your beliefs or faith. That doesn’t mean you can’t express them – it’s a teaching moment – but in my opinion this writer crossed the line when she started to make me – the reader – feel as if she was passing judgment. I have faith but am not religious and quite frankly being judgmental isn’t being Christian because only God is allowed to judge the living and the dead.

The disclaimer was very much understated that it’s almost a waste having it there. This novel should have been categorized as a Christian Romance – let the reader know and decide what they’re purchasing. Knowing that would not have deterred me from purchasing this book, but the writer’s style of writing has dissuaded me from reading anything further from her, let alone buying another book.

Notwithstanding my comments above, this novel could have been great but the story and the characters were unrealistic. The characters – their thought process and reaction – went back and forth from being real to unreal. I like escaping when I read and I enjoy a good fictitious book every now and then, but if I’m reading something that’s suppose to be non-fiction in theory then I want the characters and the events throughout to be realistic.

Giving Up the Ghost : A Memoir (John MacRae Books), by Hilary Mantel

In postwar rural England, Hilary Mantel grew up convinced that the most improbable of accomplishments, including "chivalry, horsemanship, and swordplay," were within her grasp. Once married, however, she acquired a persistent pain that led to destructive drugs and patronizing psychiatry, ending in an ineffective but irrevocable surgery. There would be no children; in herself she found instead one novel, and then another.

From Publishers Weekly
As she approaches midlife, Mantel applies her beautiful prose and expansive vocabulary to a somewhat meandering memoir. The English author of eight novels (The Giant, O'Brien; Eight Months on Ghazzah Street; etc.) is "writing in order to take charge of the story of my childhood and my childlessness; and in order to locate myself... between the lines where the ghosts of meaning are." Among the book's themes are ghosts and illness, both of which Mantel has much experience with. She expends many pages on her earliest years, and then on medical treatments in her 20s, but skips other decades almost entirely as she brings readers up to the present. At age seven she senses a horrifying creature in the garden, which as a Catholic she concludes is the devil; later, houses she lives in have "minor poltergeists." The first and foremost ghost, though, is the baby she will never have. By 20, Mantel is in constant pain from endometriosis, and at 27, after years of misdiagnosis and botched treatment, she has an operation that ends her fertility. Her pains come back, she has thyroid problems and drug treatments cause her body to balloon; she describes these ordeals with remarkably wry detachment. Fans of Mantel's critically acclaimed novels may enjoy the memoir as insight into her world. Often, though, all the fine detail that in another work would flesh out a plot-such as embroidery silk "the scarlet shade of the tip of butterflies' wings"-has nowhere to go.

From The New Yorker
This bleak memoir by a prolific British novelist recounts her upbringing in the North of England in the nineteen-fifties and sixties. Mantel's domineering stepfather has contempt for her intellectual aspirations and for her constant nausea and migraines. When, at college, she takes her symptoms to a doctor, he prescribes antidepressants and sends her on to a psychiatrist, who, in turn, suggests that she give up her studies to work for her mother selling dresses. Finally, at twenty-seven, she is diagnosed with severe endometriosis. Her uterus is removed, and hormone replacements cause extreme weight gain. For most of her life, she has struggled with emaciation, but strangers increasingly assume she is pregnant, now an impossibility. While Mantel's prose shimmers with suppressed anger, the reader might have preferred a story more plainly shaped, and one that gave some sense of the growth of her remarkable imagination.

From Booklist
With a harsh wit reminiscent of Mary McCarthy, prizewinning novelist Mantel writes about growing up Catholic in England, about her family secrets, school, work, and marriage, and about the chronic, excruciatingly painful illness that hit her at the age of 27. Without nostalgia, she remembers her childhood in a village community: "Every person oversaw the affairs of the next; and sniggered about them." Her self-mockery is just as entertaining, and she's honest about how hard it is to remember: "you can't make sense of childhood, only report it as it felt." She's enraged against the medical establishment that for years treated her physical symptoms as female neurosis caused by overambition. Yet with the fury and farce, she also writes with lyrical simplicity about loss. She remembers missing her dad after the family breakup: "He was never mentioned after we parted: except by me, to me. We never met again." Women's book groups will want this, and so will writers trying to tell their stories. Hazel Rochman

glimpses of otherness
By LitCrit101
In her memoir, Giving up the Ghost, Hilary Mantel obliquely tackles a subject much debated in psychoanalytical circles of a century ago and revisited by feminist literary critics from 1968 onward: To what degree is female ambition and achievement in the arts ( or any field, for that matter) a compensation for an unfertile womb, and in what way is artistic creativity in women related to mental instability and even madness? In our post-feminist era such suggestions sound outrageous, reactionary. We are accustomed to thinking that we can and will have it all. But slip back fifty, then one hundred years or more and examine the lives of great women writers and poets. Virginia Woolf insisted that without leisure time, education, private income, and a space to write, a woman could not produce literature, hence the demands of motherhood and marriage might be a serious obstacle. Emily Dickinson, a spinster, withdrew from the world, Charlotte Bronte died of a pregnancy related illness with her unborn first child, Elizabeth Bishop was gay, Sylvia Plath found both marriage and motherhood devastating. Mantel reminds us that in her formative years, a time not so long ago, women were expected to stay home and to become homemakers, and though England already had a long tradition of penwomen, it was no easy journey to become a writer.
This memoir is about how a poor, "neverwell" child of Irish origins, from a disadvantaged family became one of the world's most celebrated novelists, twice winning the Man Booker prize, an unprecedented feat. Home was drab lodgings without a bathtub, with few books, where her mother maintained an unusual mnage living, for a time, with both her husband and lover. The latter would be the one to rescue Hilary and her family, giving them the dignity of a real home and a new name. At school this pale, phlegmatic child was at times picked on, grudgingly admired, avoided. As she fashions her story, she gives us echoes of other stories we know and love. The rage that bubbles within her at school recalls Jane Eyre's ( and indeed she claims, Jane Eyre is the story of all women writers). Her descriptions of the strange visions that sometimes inhabit her psyche echo moments of Turn of the Screw, in which she is both the governess and the malignant child, other moments, such as the eerie revelation of evil she glimpses in the yard might have been drawn from Stephen King filtered through Mary Butts.
Ever since her childhood, she has been subject to visions, "seeing things" that "aren't there," she confesses, well aware that the inclusion in quotes somehow makes these ghostly presences more explainable or more acceptable to contemporary minds. Like Henry James, she never lets us know her own explanation for the ghosts she regularly sees: are they metaphors, the product of ophthalmic migraines, or projections of her own psyche? She suggests all these possibilities, tying in hormonal issues as a further explanation. The heart of Mantel's memoir focuses just on these issues, and the debilitating condition with which she battled for years, undergoing an early hysterectomy. The surgery turned out to be useless, as replacement estrogen worsened her symptoms and led to uncontrollable weight gain. The medical establishment had no remedy but was convinced she was the problem, not her disease. For many years she was given pain killers, antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs. Struggling to come to grips with herself, her pain, her changing and changed body, she starts writing again, but her doctors do not approve. Why not she asks. The chilling reply is simply "because." This was all happening ten years after Germaine Greer published The Female Eunuch. But luckily for us, Mantel kept at it, six years later published and was paid for her first story. At one point, she realized that she was unconsciously waiting for children who would never come. Empty bedrooms, an overfilled pantry, presses packed with sheets for too many beds were the telltale signs. Once she brought her mourning to the light, the unborn ghosts of her womb became novels.
There is no self-pity in this memoir, which is poignant, unexpectedly funny at times. If anything there is too much self-control, and even minute traces of self-loathing. In handling the sections of her childhood, she shapes the story to the child's half understandings. The male figures, father, step-father, brothers, husband, are at best presences. Yet every sentence, every phrase in this book is breathtaking, artfully crafted, subtly shaped. We almost forget the message given at the beginning. If you want to be a writer " Rise in the quiet hours of the night, prick your fingertips, and use the blood for ink." But what we have read has been written in blood, product of pain, sacrifice, self-control, distance from oneself and from one's own ghosts. A real achievement.

Fascinating glimpse into the life of a great contemporary writer
By Penny
I love the way Hilary Mantel writes. Her imagery and descriptions are so true, so evocative, sometimes I need to put on a sweater or snuggle deeper into the duvet just to cope. She strings me out and keeps me roped in. I have no other way of expressing just how fine her writing feels to me. When I'm reading her work, I feel that she has tapped into the great reservoir--the man-made basin brimming with pain and suffering, dreams and devils. This book is haunting and grim--yet one identifies so strongly with the author, risk and all.

intimate and engrossing
By carolinaislandgirl
This memoir for me was what I look for in a memoir: revealing, analytical, self-deprecating and helping the reader come to know the author as a person. When the memoir is written by someone who has only been known to the reader as an admired author, but not at all on a personal level, and the memoir draws the character of the writer so indelibly, it can only be a very satisfying read. And that's exactly what it was for me. I wondered who in the world could write the novels she has written and now I find out a bit about the woman, her interior world and her life, in a very well wrought piece.

Review
On the title-page spread, a diverse group of children and their families enter a building hung with a large banner proclaiming “Christmas Pageant.” The rest of the book presents the traditional play as it unfolds on stage. The narration offers a simply worded version of the biblical story, following Mary and Joseph through Bethlehem to the stable where the child is born. Angels appear to the shepherds, who make their way to the stable, followed by the wise men. All kneel to worship the infant. Though there are no surprises in the text, the illustrations include a few unexpected and charming additions. Mary rides around Bethlehem in a little red wagon; the baby looks a lot like Raggedy Andy; and two shepherds have a tug-of- war struggle over a toy lamb. With the spotlight on the rounded forms of rosy-cheeked, costumed kids drawn in Engelbreit’s signature style, this colorful picture book will please her adult fans while holding the interest of many children. --- Carolyn Phelan (Booklist)

A classic Sunday School Christmas pageant is acted out by a multiethnic cast of children in this Christmas offering in Englebreit's signature illustration style. The pageant begins with a little black girl as an angel reading the passage from Luke that announces that Jesus has been born. The text describes the traditional Nativity story as though a narrator were reading it, with the child performers coming on stage in costume as the story progresses. Mary is an Asian girl, and Joseph is a white boy with red hair and a fake brown beard. One of the wise men is black, and a chorus of angels includes several children of color. The children are dressed in charming costumes with appropriate details, and there are funny little incidents tucked into the illustrations, such as two shepherd girls playing tug of war with a toy sheep and a tiny cow asleep on stage at the conclusion. The girl playing the part of Mary uses a rag doll for baby Jesus, and the final page shows Mary hugging her doll tenderly under the shining star. Though almost every Christian Sunday school puts on a Christmas pageant, there are few picture books that cover this annual holiday event, especially titles accessible to preschoolers. Children preparing to be in a pageant will enjoy this, as will Engelbreit's many adult fans. (Picture book. 3-6) (Kirkus)

An elementary-school Christmas pageant plays out with warm humor in Engelbreit’s (The Night Before Christmas) holiday offering. The author’s cherubic characters perform the Nativity story using rudimentary props that will trigger smiles: a robed Joseph with a comically fake beard pulls Mary in a red wagon outfitted with a donkey head, a rocking horse and a rubber duck keep watch in the stable, the newborn Jesus is a rag doll, and stuffed animals fill in for sheep. The narrative is a straightforward, pared-down version of the biblical tale, without dialogue, which leaves the pictures to showcase the children’s personalities (two shepherds fight over a toy lamb, a prima donna’s antics irk her fellow angels, and a costumed cow falls asleep as the Wise Men arrive). The Nativity tale is one of great things born out of humble circumstances, a theme that dovetails perfectly with the homespun staging of the children’s production. Starred review on 10/1/16. (Publishers Weekly)

Blood Rites (The Dresden Files, Book 6), by Jim Butcher

In this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files, Chicago's only professional wizard takes on a case for a vampire and becomes the prime suspect in a series of ghastly murders.

Harry Dresden has had worse assignments than going undercover on the set of an adult film. Like fleeing a burning building full of enraged demon-monkeys, for instance. Or going toe-to-leaf with a walking plant monster. Still, there’s something more troubling than usual about his newest case. The film’s producer believes he’s the target of a sinister curse—but it’s the women around him who are dying, in increasingly spectacular ways.

Harry’s doubly frustrated because he only got involved with this bizarre mystery as a favor to Thomas—his flirtatious, self-absorbed vampire acquaintance of dubious integrity. Thomas has a personal stake in the case Harry can’t quite figure out, until his investigation leads him straight to the vampire’s oversexed, bite-happy family. Now, Harry’s about to discover that Thomas’ family tree has been hiding a shocking secret: a revelation that will change Harry’s life forever.

Per usual, wizard-detective extraordinaire Harry Dresden is in trouble. He barely escapes an assassination attempt, courtesy of the Black Council of vampires, when Thomas, a vampire who has helped Harry out on occasion, asks him to take a case. It seems someone doesn't want porno film director Arturo Genosa's latest effort to get off the ground. An entropy spell has killed two of Arturo's assistants, and Thomas wants Harry to find the culprit. With suspects abounding--Arturo has no fewer than three ex-wives--Harry decides to pose as a production assistant at the studio. Though he isn't able to stop another sabotage attempt, this one threatening an actress' life, he does save the young woman. With danger closing in, the last thing Harry needs is a sexy succubus and a surprising revelation about his heritage. Filled with sizzling magic and intrigue as well as important developments for Harry, the latest of his adventures will have fans rapidly turning the pages. Kristine Huntley

“Fans of Laurell  K. Hamilton and Tanya Huff will love this series.”—Midwest Book Review

“Superlative.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves.”—Cinescape

“Butcher...spins an excellent noirish detective yarn in a well-crafted, supernaturally-charged setting. The supporting cast is again fantastic, and Harry’s wit continues to fly in the face of a peril-fraught plot.”—Booklist (starred review)

“What’s not to like about this series?...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves.”—SF Site

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.”—Library Journal

“What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files].”—The Washington Times

About the Author
A martial arts enthusiast whose résumé includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least two hundred years ago, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher turned to writing as a career because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives mostly inside his own head so that he can write down the conversation of his imaginary friends, but his head can generally be found in Independence, Missouri. Jim is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera novels, and the Cinder Spires series, which began with The Aeronaut’s Windlass.

Thomas and puppies: it's complicated!
By Amazon Customer
Harry Dresden starts this adventure in a car with a box of stolen puppies, running from demons and being driven by a vampire. Thomas is driving the car because he needs a favour from Harry as he thinks someone is targeting a friend of his with "evil eye" curses. Two women in his close circle died under very odd and slightly cartoonish circumstances. And there is also the tiny issue with the vampires of the Black Court that do not feel enough beings are trying to kill Harry.

This story has an amazing start but then it slows down substantially. There is a great villain but probably because Harry did not need to save the world, I felt he could take on anyone/anything. I enjoyed seeing more Murphy and learning about her family, and learning so much about Thomas of course. Thomas was the best part of the storyline and the lack of action was balanced by learning more about Harry and his life. This book was hard to put down and made me giggle more often than not. This series is really good!

still loving this series
By Sneaky Burrito
I've been reading through the Dresden Files books at a pretty fast clip and I'm almost out of the ones I got in the $1.99 Kindle promo! So the first thing I will say about these books is that they're easy to read. But don't go too fast, because there are some funny lines stuck here and there that you don't want to miss.

I think a lot of aspects of "Blood Rites" are pretty solid. Love that we're seeing another side of Murphy, that we're getting more information about Harry's past (and it's not just infodumping, but actually is revealed in relation to the self-contained story within this book). White Court vampire Thomas and mercenary Kincaid are back, as is Harry's mentor Ebenezar. We learn more about all of them, as well. The information is introduced in a way that makes sense, in terms of the story; there's a bit of telling with regards to background information, but it is smart for the author to do it that way -- if two people are angry with one another, and Harry doesn't understand why, someone has to explain it to him (and, thereby, also to us).

At any rate, even though Harry is the POV character, we're far enough along in the series that we are getting to know the other characters better, too, and I like that. Too often, first-person POV novels involve a trade-off, wherein you just don't learn much about the supporting characters. It's still a slow process to learn about Harry's companions, but I like the progression. Harry is gaining depth, as well. We learn more of his feelings about family, his sense of loss at not having known his mother. He's also getting better at asking for help instead of going into a location and blasting away. It makes him more sympathetic and less aloof, and that's good.

The action is pretty intense for the entire second half of the book, with multiple confrontations that build in intensity. (Suppose that was the case for book 5, as well, but I feel like the final confrontation had more impact in this book than the final confrontation in book 5 did.) Vampires once again feature pretty strongly in this book; we learn a lot more about White Court vampires (the Red Court is absent here) and there's a battle with Black Court vampires, as well. (White Court vampires aren't exactly good guys, which you learn here, but they feed on emotion and tend to work against each other in secret, subtle ways. Black Court vampires, on the other hand, are the nastiest ones out there.)

My first thought upon the conclusion of the confrontation with the Black Court vampires was that things had been too easy, that that couldn't be all there was to it. Thankfully, the characters address this later on, so I know the author deliberated on this before writing the scene and didn't just add it as filler. One thing I've said about past books, and it's true here as well, is that I like the way Butcher doles out additional pieces of information about the supernatural world. It's not all thrown at us at once; rather, each book generally goes deeper into one or two of the world. It's much easier to keep track of everything that way.

In case you didn't know, this is book 6 in the series. I'd highly recommend reading the first five books (in order) before getting to this one. Nearly all of them contain bits and pieces of information that shed light on events in this book, as said events relate to the greater story arc of the series. There are a couple of things you won't get at all if you haven't read the previous books. Small things, but noticing them added to my enjoyment. All of these books have self-contained mysteries and all of them reveal bits and pieces of magic, the supernatural, etc., as these things exist in the Dresden universe. I think this book is one of the better ones at integrating the mystery and its solution into the overall series.

In this book, Harry is hired to protect the cast and crew of an adult film from a curse that's killing performers in the film, one by one. Further, the war between wizards and vampires (that Harry started back in book 3) is ongoing. As you might expect, there are a lot of descriptions of women and their physical features, but this is par for the course for a Dresden book. There's definitely some sexual content and a lot of blood, gore, and violence. These books do have a dark, bleak tone.

I wasn't able to predict the ending (I'm never very good at guessing who the killer is in traditional mysteries), but all the clues made sense to me. Nothing seemed too implausible (at least within the universe of the story). I'm just pleased to have figured one thing out on my own (one character is engaged to be married but no one seems to know who the fiancee is), although by the end of the book, there weren't many candidates left, so that may have been process of elimination.

The setting was (again) Chicago, but there wasn't really anything specific to the city in this book. The writing was similar in tone and style to previous novels in the series, perhaps with a few more snarky one-liners than in the past (I like this). This is definitely not a difficult book to get through.

If you've enjoyed the previous books in the series, you should like this one, too.

GREAT READ, AS ALWAYS!
By Victor Smith
Harry Dresden, Wizard extraordinary, never has a slow day! So, when Thomas, Harry's inexplicably helpful, white court vampire 'friend' asks Harry to take a client who's seemingly in fear for his life, Harry tentatively agrees with the caveat that if he takes the job, then Thomas must come clean with Harry as to why Thomas has been so very helpful and even gone so far as to save Harry's life a time or two...Thomas agrees to the caveat, though he warns Harry that he won't believe it, anyway!
It quickly becomes apparent that there is indeed a dangerous plot underway that seems to be targeting the Producer of a newly formed motion picture studio that has moved into Chicago after breaking with a bigger studio in California, in hope of being able to make more creative pictures and cast a wider range of actors and actresses. Harry gets a rude surprise when he shows up for his first day on the case, undercover as a production assistant, only to find that the company is producing Adult Erotica...porno, in a word!
Still off balance because of the unusual environment, Harry is quickly embroiled in one problem after another, fighting to derail what appears to be a very strong Entropy Curse that seems to be targeting all the women on the set, and there seems to be no connections between the victims.
On top of that, Harry is attacked by Black Court Vampires, led by Mavra, a dangerous and very old survivor of the pogroms and Vampire Hunts that occurred following the publication of Bram Stokers "DRACULA", which spelled out, in plain language, all the weaknesses inherent in the Black Court Vampires, and how to kill them so that they stay dead!! Only the very strongest, most vicious, survivors lived through that time, and Mavra was in that number. Now she has come to Chicago with the express purpose of destroying Harry Dresden, and every man woman and child that he has helped or cared for since he came to town.
There's no rest for the weary, as Harry hurtles from one crisis to the next...full out mayhem on an epic scale! Harry must call in favors where he's able, and recruit from a very limited pool of talent, and while, as usual, he manages to put together a Dream team of potential power, even a win may leave him in an untenable position...it may take 'Blood Rites' to make things right in the end

Changing Men, Transforming Culture: Inside the Men's Movement (The Yale Cultural Sociology Series), by Eric Magnuson

The men's movement is a fascinating and vexing phenomenon that is part of the important history of gender change in the United States and the world. Men are finally engaging the challenges of feminism and rethinking what it means to be a man in today's society. At stake in this "crisis of masculinity" is the future of the family, the economy, and the society as a whole. This book examines the cultural imagery and the actions of the men of the mythopoetic men's movement in particular, examining their ideas, goals, and behavior. The book innovates theoretically by synthesizing cultural sociology with an interest in power as well as social psychology.
