Stephen Davis, longtime Atlantan, has been a Civil Warrior since the fourth grade. He served as Book Review Editor for Blue & Gray magazine for more than twenty years, and is the author of more than a hundred articles on the Civil War in both scholarly and popular journals. His book Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman, Joe Johnston and the Yankee Heavy Battalions, was published in 2001. He is also the author of What the Yankees Did to Us: Sherman s Bombardment and Wrecking of Atlanta (2012).

HORRIBLE DESCRIPTION!

The solutions manual for Anton, Bivens, and Davis' CALCULUS is broken down into several manuals. When I purchased this, I believed I was getting the solutions manual for the entire book. I was dumbfounded when I realized it BEGINS in Chapter 11, and ends in Chapter 15.

Speaking to the manager of my college's bookstore, I learned that this is in multiple "installments" ... and I can't order from my school because the bookstore doesn't know which one to order, either.

Very frustrated with this book/author/solutions manual/publisher.

Incredibly bad!

This is a very shoddy piece of work. As others have noted, this solutions manual only covers ch 11-15. I knew that when I ordered it. The reason I'm giving it just one star - first time I've ever done that - is that many of the answers are simply wrong. I found 3 wrong answers on two adjoining pages (314-315) - and that's just doing a small fraction of the problems on those pages. Check it yourself: Ch 12.2 #37, Ch 12.3 #5 and #9. Just compare the answers with those in the back of the text book. The text book is correct - the solution manual is wrong. Also, as others have noted, many of the "solutions" are little more than slight expansions on the answer, i.e. not a step-by-step solution. Amazing!

Poor substitue for a solution manual

The solutions in this manual are little more than the answers provided at the back of the text book. If you are looking for a real solution manual, one that will help you understand the steps needed to complete the problems in the book you will need to try another source. Try Chegg... it is more helpful (though not perfect) and well worth the small monthly fee.

A Fascinating Look at Eighteenth Century Medicine and Its Implications

In The Woman Beneath the Skin: A Doctor’s Patients in Eighteenth-Century Germany, Barbara Duden examines the records of Dr. Johannes Pelargius Storch to discover how Dr. Storch and his female patients each conceived of the female body and, through their interactions with each other, defined the nature and limits of that body. Duden’s work, like much of what we’ve read so far, relies heavily on Focualt and the construction of and competition between discourses. Duden writes, “It was only toward the end of the eighteenth century that the modern body was created as the effect and object of medical examination. It was newly created as an object that could be abused, transformed, and subjugated. According to Foucault, this passivity of the object was the result of the ritual of clinical examination” (pg. 3). At the same time that doctors created the body as an object of clinical examination, they described disease as something based in a person’s entire lived experience. Duden writes, “Disease was to be seen as a mental and psychic disturbance of the relation to one’s environment and fellow human beings. Writing at a high literary level and in the hope of reforming the practice of medicine, these men [Viktor von Weizs�cker, V.E. von Gebsattel, and others] focused their attention on the doctor’s relation to the individual life story” (pg. 43). These stories as Storch recorded them serve as the basis of Duden’s argument.
Duden’s description of doctors’ place in society serves to set up her argument for the conflicting discourses of women’s bodies. According to Duden, “The lack of uniformity in training is important, since it tells us something about the conditions that shaped a person’s self-image, about the tensions between the academic self-image and a craftlike, practical competence” (pg. 54). This struggle played out in Storch’s interaction with his patients. Patients brought their complaints to the doctor, who diagnosed their ailments based on patient histories, and prescribed something to treat pain (pg. 154). Often, the patients requested specific treatments, giving them a degree of control over their treatment. Duden writes, “The women always had the last word. The judged the merits of the prescription and did so solely in accord with their own experiences" (pg. 156). Eighteenth century medicine conceived of gender and sex in manner that contradicts modern understandings. Duden writes, “Many of the manifestations that we clearly perceive as sex characteristics, were in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries not unequivocal signs for the difference between man and woman…The eye of culture sees in the order of nature what it expects to see” (pg. 116). To this end, doctors expected both men and women to bleed, though from different areas and at different intervals. Interestingly, Duden’s discussion contradicts Kuriyama’s claim that Western medicine avoids metaphor. Duden writes of the ability to describe pain, “The language of pain conveys an entire world view. As long as there was no classificatory landscape of the inner processes of the body, the pain that was to be described, which lurked invisible inside the body and could not be grasped objectively, had to be expressed in relation to a third phenomenon” (pg. 89). Further, “a metaphoric language reveals layers of perception precisely through its mediated structure, since it can speak only in a contextual relation” (pg. 89). Duden’s analysis of Storch’s records offers insight into the changing nature of medicine in the eighteenth century.

About the Author
Dr. Larry Pace is a statistics author and educator, as well as a consultant. He lives in the upstate area of South Carolina in the town of Anderson. He is a professor of statistics, mathematics, psychology, management, and leadership. He has programmed in a variety of languages and scripting languages including R, Visual Basic, JavaScript, C##, PHP, APL, and in a long-ago world, Fortran IV. He writes books and tutorials on statistics, computers, and technology. He has also published many academic papers, and made dozens of presentations and lectures. He has consulted with Compaq Computers, AT&T, Xerox Corporation, the U.S. Navy, and International Paper. He has taught at Keiser University, Argosy University, Capella University, Ashford University, Anderson University (where he was the chair of the behavioral sciences department), Clemson University, Louisiana Tech University, LSU in Shreveport, the University of Tennessee, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Georgia.

Disappointing

I am not a beginner with R, but I am interested to see how people approach teaching R to beginners. It's not an easy system to approach, though it should be.

Some beginners seem to like this book, which depresses me a bit. The code tends to be clumsy, and all too often just plain wrong. (Clearly no reproducibility mechanism has been used as some examples are even syntactically incorrect.) A certain amount of clumsiness is probably a good idea if it leads the beginner to an understanding by a more accessible route, but most of the clumsiness here does not. An example is where the author uses an awkward loop to produce a copy of the vector x omitting the ith component, when all that is needed is x[-i], and I cannot believe this is difficult, even for beginners.

What disappoints me about this book is that all to often it makes life difficult for the user and heads off in, to put it mildly, unhelpful and confusing directions.

The book has a technical reviewer as part of the authorship team, but the role seem more of an adviser than of a reviewer. In places the 'reviewer's' advice is acknowledged, but not actually adopted. This I find very puzzling.

Great book for learning R

I like this book because it takes a practical hands-on approach to learning R by walking one through practical examples. I think the book is appropriately titled. It's not an exhaustive reference manual or cookbook nor does it teach one statistics. I have a lot of experience with SAS and it was easy for me to learn R from this book using SAS as my frame of reference. Neither R nor SAS are Excel. The former are statistical languages and they assume that you are already comfortable with statistical methods.

That said, it does have detailed examples on how to set up and run many of the popular statistical methods which I won't enumerate here because you can read them all in the table of contents. Each section of the book that discusses a particular statistical method begins with an overview the relevant equations supporting it. I like the examples of plotting results. I'll be using this book as a quick reference when I need it for statistical methods that I frequently use.

Ideal for the born-again statistician

I acquired an MA-level education that involved lots of study of econometrics (basically regression analysis using economic variables) 20-plus years ago. Unfortunately I hadn't used a lick of that knowledge until I was recently hired by a research org and felt the need to brush up on my stats and regression skills. This book, combined with a download of the R console, was my ticket to get back up and running with my new statistician peers. The author includes a lot of useful datasets, the most interesting to me being the student retention study which he indicates resulted in a very valuable real-life implementation at his institution. Yes, there are occasional disconnects between the R commands displayed and the output (some missing attach statements and load / read commands). That can be annoying but at least it makes you think when you enter those command and create output. If you're paying full freight for a hardcopy I can appreciate your concern over that (I read an online version), but if you would like to learn R and need to revisit the fundamentals like I did, this book is extremely useful.

The meisters of madcap are at it again. This time, Prelutsky and Sis (The Dragons Are Singing Tonight) head off on safari to Scranimal Island, an exotic spot full of odd hybrid creatures just ripe for their devious brand of silliness. Whether tracking a caravan of Camelberta Peaches ("All have humpy, bumpy backs, Stocked with water, juice, and snacks, So the creatures never need Wonder where to drink or feed"), avoiding the clutches of the dread Radishark ("Its appalling, bulbous body Is astonishingly red, And its fangs are sharp and gleaming In its huge and horrid head") or spying on the Bananaconda ("How sinuous and sly you are, How slippery, how yellow"), they scramble up a smorgasbord of flora and fauna. Prelutsky tweaks language with his characteristic glee, wedging in plenty of humor ("Poor Avocadodos, Ungainly and green, You're gone from today's Biological scene") and, as always when Si s is on board, his exquisite artistry raises the bar, adding depth to Prelutsky's light verse. Plying his trademark delicate line and crosshatching, Si s sets off the fantastic creatures against spare, expansive vistas, investing the muted ink-and-watercolor illustrations with a quizzically visionary style. A pair of brightly clad young explorers lurk at the edge of each scene, adding a droll visual grace note. All ages.

Grade 2-5-Prelutsky introduces the curious inhabitants of Scranimal Island through his skillful and captivating poems. The creatures, such as the Mangorilla and Orangutangerine, are each a cross between an animal and a fruit, vegetable, or flower, and behave accordingly. For instance, "On a bump beside a road/Sits a lowly POTATOAD,/Obviously unaware/Of its own existence there./On its coarse and warty hide,/It has eyes on every side,/Eyes that fail, apparently,/To take note of what they see." S's's illustrations are a wonderful combination of the eerie and humorous (readers might be reminded of his fantastical island in Komodo! [Greenwillow, 1993]), and give children a visual clue as to the creature's elements, in case they haven't figured it out yet. (A rebus-like chart on the back cover is more explicit, illustrating "potato + toad = potatoad", etc.) Hippopotamushrooms smile benevolently from their forest floor, the Pandaffodil munches bamboo beatifically, majestic Broccolions stalk the lithe Antelopetunia. These black-line and watercolor illustrations in a light palette take up three-quarters of each spread; the verses, in large and legible black type, accompany them on a pastel-tinged antique paper background. On occasion on this island, readers may come across a creature that is a cross of two animals (no plant matter involved), such as the Ostricheetah or the Stormy Petrelephant. Though as eloquently described, they are simply not as funny as the Porcupineapple or the Avocadodos, and somehow spoil the fun. The point of nonsense, after all, is to stick to the rules-just, the wrong rules. Nevertheless, Prelutsky and S's have pulled off something great here-it is their best collaboration to date.

Fantastic read for children of all ages

Jack Prelutsky books have become a special bond between my 6 year old son and I. He has this book, Behold the Umbrellaphant, and Stardines, and we both love the silly poetry. We both also like music, so the rhythm of the poems is fun as we can almost sing it. He loves the wackiness and thoroughly enjoys the pictures. The silly names of the animals are fun for him to try and sound out, so not only is it fun for me to read to him, but he also is learning about words as he reads it to me, without even realizing it. I'd buy any book by Prelutsky and recommend them for anyone with children of any age (my 10 year old daughter loves them as well).

Great book

My son loves this book. Such a silly mix up of animals and food, with very catchy rhymes. My 3.5 yr old has most of them memorized and does not tire of hearing them again and again. It has also helped to broaden his vocabulary. So happy Amazon had it in hardcover, the first time I looked for it, a few months back, I could only find paperback.

Learning about literature while having fun? You bet!

I was intrigued and amused to see another reviewer say her children were obsessed with "Scranimals" -- because that's the same reaction we got with our kid!

Jack Prelutsky evidently knows the secret of how to captivate children, especially when teamed up with illustrators like Peter Sis. Nearly every Prelutsky book that enters our home gets the same treatment: fascination, amusement, and above all, lots of reading and re-reading.

One might say that this is not Prelutsky's most ingenious work, since it's basically a single concept stretched out into a series of variations, not all of which are equally clever. But there's more to it than that. The illustrations are compelling and fun. And much of the poetry is more highly-crafted than one might expect, given the silly first impression the book makes.

A great example is the description of the "Bananaconda" (that word alone always makes ME laugh!) in which the author slathers syballant syllables in silly sequences. I took the opportunity to point out to our first-grader how a poet describes things differently than other kinds of writers.

I then read it aloud to demonstrate that point, sssimply by exsstending each of the esses on the page. At that point, most kids can make the connection between the sound of the words, and their understanding of "S" as the sound made by a snake -- something many of them learn in preschool, if not earlier.

And of course those words were written ABOUT a snake. For a kid to learn that words can have multiple layers of meaning, and to learn that concept at such an early age... well, that's really something. And Prelutsky is one of the best at delivering that kind of depth, even when combined with utter silliness.

In short, Scranimals is definitely a worthy addition to any child's collection, at nearly any age.

Guess my expectation was too high

Just finish reading the book and to be frank the author could have done better. The first chapter talks about the case of Deyda Hydara which to me makes no sense to start a book about dictator Jammeh. I understand the mystery surrounding his death and the relationship between the Author and Deyda. I think an intro about Jammeh and the events leading to July 22 1994 could have been a better chapter to start with. I did not read anything about July 22 1994 in the Book. Chapter 14 (THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENTS IN US HISTORY) was not needed for this book. Lots of repetition about same events.
The Author should have work on his dates, Chapter 2 starts with "On Tuesday August 28". My question is what year? in chapter 3 he also mention " President Jammeh last night " again what date? for future readers.
I understand and support Mr. Mbai's efforts to exposed Yaya Jammeh and his cronies, but i really think he could have done a better job of exposing Jammeh and his regime's atrocities by taking his time and research more about Jammeh. The book is not in chronological order. Hopefully the Author will come up with a better one in the Future.

The book is full of material information that can help investigating bodies to follow in pursuit of human rights violators in The Gambia .it further exposes that a country without a proper rule of law,is at the determinant of the masses.though hastily written,the details in the book are overwhelming and should be an eye opener to all Gambians .

Asif Saifuddin, BSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCP, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore, UK. He earned his medical degree from The University of Manchester Medical School, undertook his radiology training in Leeds, and obtained a Fellowship of The Royal College of Radiologists. He is primarily interested in all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology, but in particular diagnostic and interventional imaging of musculoskeletal tumours.

Philippa Tyler, BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCS, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore, UK and an honorary lecturer at University College London, UK. She graduated in medicine from University College London and undertook her radiology training at St Mary’s Hospital, London. She completed an MRI fellowship at St Mary’s Hospital, London followed by a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Dr. Tyler’s practice involves all aspects of interventional and diagnostic musculoskeletal radiology, and she has a special interest in spinal imaging.

Rikin Hargunani, BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCS, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Stanmore and an honorary senior lecturer at University College London, UK. only usable if you have no experience in the field at all

This book is a complete waste of time if you are actually trying to design and implement a system for the first time. Almost every section covered ends with, installation details regarding equipment and wiring will depend on the manufacturer. Which is of course true, but that should not have prevented the use of concrete examples of test systems that specify how one could create one of these systems would have been much more useful for someone attempting to implement an access control system for the first time. If all you are looking for is a general overview of different doors, conduits, wire ratings, and types of access control with no actual examples of how to implement said products into a working system, then this is the book for you. If you are like me and trying to create an actual system, this was a waste of time.

There follow chapters in which the intricate molecular machinery that adapts the organisms metabolism and development to life in the soil, including antibiotic production, is illuminated by the DNA blueprint. Then come an up-to-the minute account of the use of genetic engineering to make novel, hybrid, antibiotics, and a topical description of techniques to learn the roles of the thousands of genes in a genome sequence, throwing a powerful light on the biology of the organisms and their harnessing for increasing antibiotic productivity. In the final chapter we return to the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, the first actinomycetes to be discovered, and how methodology, in part derived from the study of the streptomycetes, is being applied to understand and control these still deadly pathogens.

About the Author
Laura Story is a well known songwriter whose career has skyrocketed in 2011 to the top of the Charts with her blockbuster hit, Blessings. Now one of the most played artists on Christian radio, she and her husband Martin, who recovered from a brain tumor and major surgery a few years ago, live in Atlanta. There she works in music and women s ministry at Perimeter Church (4,000 members).

Laura Story's walk through the scriptures is a blessing

Laura Story's story is one that most girls dream of - marry the star athlete, being a Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter and go on tour and see the world.

But Story doesn't see her 'story' as anything but ordinary made into extra-ordinary thanks to God, and she reflects on this briefly and humbly in her new book, "What if your BLESSINGS come through Raindrops". It is a devotional guide that reads like a journal filled with Story's intimate digging into the scriptures and sharing of special verses and quotes filled with hope, encouragement and blessings.

Formatted to be a month-long guide, with spaces for the reader to write her or his thoughts, Story's devotional guide is more than just a mere inspirating, motivational book that can make a reader feel good. "Blessings," the devotional book, gives the reader a boost up the ladder in his or her seeking to have a more intimate and more purposeful relationship with God, and Story peppers the pages with realistic, thought-provoking, 'Ah, I get it and now I can apply it' lessons.

She told me on the phone, as I am the editor of an online newspaper, [...], that she was just a "girl walking through the scriptures" when she wrote the book.

Encouraging Devotional

My Thoughts:

I love Laura Story's song called "What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops". There is so much truth and strong faith woven throughout the words. Every time I hear it, my heart is blessed.

Put that into a book, where Laura shares parts of her own journey with pain, suffering and tears, and you have an incredible encouraging devotional.

Every chapter is simply written in a way that makes you think and inspires your heart to look at life in a different light.

I loved the verses, the thoughts and the prayers that Laura shares for each chapter.

If you are going through any difficulty, change, struggle or trial in your life right now, this book is sure to be a blessing to you.

Remembering that God is working good through all life situations, we can trust that He is in control and we can trust His hand.

Blessings and Raindrops

What If Blessings Come Through Raindrops by Laura Story would make a great book for someone going through a hard time or just to understand their faith better. It has thirty daily devotions. They include discussion and scripture on different topics, sayings from different people, a section called "summing things up", and at the end of each topic "your own thoughts" which can be like a journal. Some of the topics it includes are "When we lose the sense of His nearness", "When we don't understand", and "Finding peace amid the thorns".

The book is based on the song, "What if Blessings Come Through Raindrops". It contains the words of the song. When my husband first introduced me to this song it touched me to the point of tears so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it.

The author has experienced her own amount of suffering when she found out her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The author says, "There is a depth of intimacy with God that can only be known through suffering".

I hope you decide to read this book and receive the blessings from it. I know I have felt blessed by reading the book.
