Now re-released as the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology

This is the conclusion of an amazing 20 year project. The result is one of the best etymological references available today (and IMHO, certainly better organized and laid out than the Oxford E.D.). While the Oxford emphasizes British sources, the Barnhart's focus is decisively American. (So you should really get both.) LONG OUT OF PRINT - here's the good news, it has been re-released (1999) and is now available as the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology, and at half the price the price of the U.S. Edition! Highly recommended.

Indispensible for word lovers - accept no substitute

If you are the type of person who reads with a dictionary within reach, you will find this resource indispensable. There is nothing like it other than the OECD, and this is much more user friendly. I am glad to see it has been republished by a different publisher, as I have complained about the very disappointing abridged version of this work published by this publisher. Don't buy that. It is no smaller, just has many fewer and shorted entries.

By My day off
some of the words that I looked for were not, and did not have a solid definition; example on some of the defined history of the words would use worlds like "may or may not, possibly, perhaps" etc... It's almost as if the writer of this book was guessing on some words. This book would be good for school but not for professional use.

more philosophic than how to advice

I found this book to be more "lofty and philosophical" than practical hands on advice, such as, "Sometimes if you join a chartiy you can meet people with common interests. The more you socialize with these people the more comfortable you will be in those settings" as opposed to other books which say, "go to charity events. If you can't afford the ticket go to the pre or post party or volunteer for the charity to get on the guest list." Also, the constant reference to prince and princess got a little annoying as did the typos. This book is FILLED with typing and grammatical errors. It actually makes me have little respect for the publisher who let this go to print. That said, there are some gems of wisdom on the pages of this book and if you suffer from a lack of self confidence or feel deep down you don't deserve to be treated and spoiled by someone else's money, this is the book for you. I regard this book more as a self help book to gain confidence than a meet a rich man book.

Good advice and a fun read

A delightful fun read and a charming, sensible, information filled, point by point approach to getting the man of your dreams. Ms. Spangler is so right on with her advice. She shares the lessons she has learned and observed through her own and girlfriends experiences while dating, in a clever tell all. She expounds things my mother told me that I didn't always listen to and should have. To find your prince charming, read and follow Donna's advice and pass this book along to all your single girlfriends!

Much needed reference for cognitive neuroscientists

An excellent resource for ERP researchers. We can't all be experts on every ERP component ever studied, and this book is a great starting point for learning about components one mightn't have studied before. I would've liked to see the P3 chapters updated a bit more - they are similar to previously published reviews in the literature. Besides this, I have already found the book to be an excellent resource for the basic properties of different ERP components.

About the Author
Ann Wortinger, LVT, VTS (ECC), is the program coordinator for the Veterinary Technology Program at Wayne State University, teaching clinical pathology. With 16 years experience in Internal medicine, Ann founded and coordinated care for the nutritional support service at a major specialty/referral hospital. She obtained her specialty certification in emergency and critical care in 2000, and is a founding member of the Academy of Internal Medicine of Veterinary Technicians, experienced in general practice, emergency and specialty medicine.

Great Resource for Pet Owner and Technician Alike

I've read dozens of books tailored for the consumer as references on companion animal nutrition. I find that most of them are written by poorly qualified authors, with minimal emphasis on current science. This book is the exception. It offers an excellent background in biochemistry necessary for an understanding of nutrition fundamentals. The writer uses language that is accessible to the lay-person, as long as they have at least a basic background in biology and chemistry. The first few chapters discuss the six basic nutrient categories, and basic points of their metabolism. The focus of the book is to instruct the reader on basic metabolism and nutritional needs during various lifestages. This book should be in the collection of any pet-nutrition enthusiast.

I am a registered nurse and bought this book for a friend in nursing school. This book had some helpful tips, but there were some spelling errors and I found one mistake in information so far. Makes me not trust the information. Found myself having to look up all the info to ensure accuracy before committing it to memory.

My favorite book on formal methods

This book is one of my favorites on formal methods. While many books on formal methods focus on presenting detailed mathematics and formal proofs, this book provides a tutorial on how to model specifications using a formal specification language.

The specification language is the Vienna Development Method Specification Language++ (VDM++). VDM++ is a functional programming language with excellent abilities to express types, data modeling, and algorithms. VDM++ adds object orientation to its predecessor VDM-SL. Unlike some formal specication languages, VDM++ is written using normal characters on a computer keyboard (no Greek letters or special mathematical symbols needed).

The book begins with a discussion of why formal modeling is useful in software development. It provides an overview on building a simple model. Part II of the book explains the VDM++ language and how to use those features in building models. Part III provides three case studies. Part IV discusses generating code from the specification.

This is a book that programmers without advanced degrees in mathematics can enjoy and profit from. While formal specification is not as widely used as some other requirements approaches, it is particularly effective for use with critical or complex sofware development. If you have never used formal specification, this is the book to start with. If you work with business rules, VDM can be a very useful tool for precise specification of business rules.

About the Author

Dr. Warren J. Keegan. Dr. Keegan is Distinguished Professor of Marketing and International Business and Director of the Institute for Global Business Strategy at the Lubin School of Business, Pace University, New York City and Westchester. He is Visiting University Professor, Cranfield School of Management (UK), CEIBS (China European International Business School) Shanghai, the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Executive Programs, and ESSEC, Cergy - Pontoise (France). He is the founder of Warren Keegan Associates, Inc., a consulting consortium of experts in global strategic management and marketing and Keegan & Company LLP, a firm specializing in litigation support. The firm is affiliated with MarkPlus, the leading marketing consulting firm of Indonesia.

Dr. Keegan is the author of many books. His text, Global Marketing Management, Seventh Edition (2002, Prentice Hall, Inc.) is recognized as the leading Global Marketing text for M.B.A. courses around the world. His other books include Offensive Marketing (2004), Global Marketing, Third Edition (2003, Prentice Hall), Marketing Plans That Work, Second Edition (2002, Butterworth-Heinemann), Marketing, Second Edition (1995, Prentice Hall), Marketing Sans Frontieres (1994, InterEditions), Advertising Worldwide (1991, Prentice Hall), and Judgments, Choices and Decisions (1984, Wiley). Dr. Keegan holds an M.B.A. and doctorate from the Harvard Business School. He has been a visiting professor at New York University, INSEAD (France), IMD (Switzerland), The Stockholm School of Economics, Emmanuel College of Cambridge University, and at the University of Hawaii. He is a former faculty member of Columbia Business School, Baruch College, and The School of Government and Business Administration of The George Washington University.

He is a Lifetime Fellow of the Academy of International Business, Individual Eminent Person (IEP) Appointed by Asian Global Business Leaders Society (other awardees include: Noel Tichy, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and Gary Wendt). His biography is listed in Marquis Who's Who in America. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC), Montreal; the Editorial Advisory Board, Cranfield School of Management; and Financial Times Management Monograph Series and is a current or former director of The S.M. Stoller Company, Inc., The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NYSE), InterAd, Inc., American Thermal Corporation, Inc., Halfway Houses of Westchester, Inc., Wainwright House, and The Rye Arts Center.

Dr. Mark C. Green. Dr. Green is Professor of Management and Marketing at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he teaches courses in management, marketing, advertising, international marketing, innovation, and Russian language. He earned his B.A. degree in Russian literature from Lawrence University, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Russian linguists from Cornell University and an M.B.A. degree in marketing management from Syracuse University.

In addition to co-authoring Global Marketing, Fourth Edition with Warren Keegan, Dr. Green has also contributed case studies and chapter materials to several other textbooks published by Prentice Hall. These include: Advertising Principles and Practices, Fourth Edition, by William Wells, John Burnett, and Sandra Moriarty (1997); Behavior in Organizations, Sixth Edition, by Jerald Greenberg and Robert Baron (1996); Business, Fourth Edition, by Ricky Griffin and Ronald Ebert (1995); and Principles of Marketing by Warren Keegan, Sandra Moriarty, and Thomas Duncan (1992). Dr. Green has also written essays on technology and global business that have appeared in the Des Moines Register and other newspapers.

Dr. Green has traveled to the former Soviet Union on numerous occasions. In 1995 and 1996, he participated in a grant project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and presented marketing seminars to audiences in Nizhny Novgorod. In addition, Dr. Green has served as a consultant to several Iowa organizations that have business and cultural ties with Russia and other former Soviet republics. Dr. Green has lectured in Russia and Ukraine on topics relating to emerging market economies. His 1992 monograph, Developing the Russian Market in the 1990s, received an award from the Iowa-based International Network on Trade.

In 1997, Dr. Green was the recipient of Simpson College's Distinguished Research and Writing Award. Dr. Green also received the 1995 Distinguished Teaching Award for senior faculty. In 1990, he was the recipient of Simpson's Excellence in Teaching Award for junior faculty. He also received the 1988 Outstanding Faculty of the Year awarded by the Alpha Sigma Lambda adult student honorary at Simpson College.

Used at Western Washington University in 2010. If you're fascinated by marketing, you'll probably like this book. If you think telemarketers are marketing professionals, you probably won't like this book. The case studies were interesting.

Purchasing Options for Global Marketing Textbook

Very up-to-date-textbook with real world scenarios. I wanted to purchase this book as an e-book. The great disappointment I have with this book is the publisher chose not to enable "text to speech". I also was about to purchase the Kindle Fire when I discovered the book did not have this feature. Why should I purchase the Kindle Fire or all new generations Kindle if the books I purchase do not have the "text to speech " feature enabled?

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.
