Science Is Fiction includes Marina McDougall's historically informative "Hybrid Roots," Brigitte Berg's heavily illustrated biographical essay "Contradictory Forces," art critic Ralph Rugoff's "Fluid Mechanics," a Liberation interview with Painlev�, stills from Painlev�'s most celebrated films laid out in storyboard fashion, and a selection of Painlev�'s writings appearing for the first time in English. Son of a French prime minister, Painleve studied natural science when it was a luxury, but he allied himself with the Surrealists and anarchists who caused such trouble in the 1920s and thereafter. Capable of grossing out Luis Bu�uel but also inspiring a pan-European seahorse frenzy through his art, Painleve comes under critical analysis in this volume, which includes his own writings, stills and quotes from his films, notes from contemporaries including Leo Sauvage, and modern appreciations and listings of his work.

Science is Fiction: The Films of Jean Painleve, edited by Andy Masaki Bellows and Marina McDougall with Brigitte Berg, exposes the reader to the odd and beautiful films of Jean Painlev� (1902-1989), who was both an artist and a scientist. These professions do not often mix, but in Painlev�'s case, his scientific side made his film work stronger and stranger. He was the first to photograph sea creatures underwater, and he was also involved with surrealist artists like Andr� Breton, Antonin Artaud, and film giant Georges Franju, in addition to his racecar driving pursuits. The images in his films are a combination of classroom science instruction and dance.
Painlev� was focused on aesthetics as well as scientific commentary in his films. According to this book, his two masterpieces are L'Hippocampe ("The Seahorse") and Le Vampire ("The Vampire"). L'Hippocampe (1934) is about the mating process between the male and female seahorse: The viewer sees a female laying eggs into the abdomen of a male, where he fertilizes them. To Painlev�, this represented the perfect relationship between the sexes. On a darker note, Le Vampire (1945) is a film that lends a political flavor to the behavior of vampire bats. The film stills displayed in the book are quite creepy. In one scene, as a bat falls asleep, it extends one of its wings in a Nazi-like salute.
Painlev� didn't believe that there was a separation between science and art. Throughout his life he founded a series of movie clubs as well as film schools. This lavishly designed book by designer Jean Wilcox is a perfect complement to the aesthetics of Painlev�. It is a book fetishist's dream date. Very rarely in this business does one see such a perfect combination of content, text, and design. Imagine the film viewer who went to see one of Painlev�'s films expecting a dry documentary, but instead encountering a strange and poetic way of looking at the world.

The best chapters of the book focus on Hong Kong, where a network of criminal syndicates, held together by blood oaths, patronage, and avarice, has long dominated vice, gambling, and prostitution and engages in extortion, racketeering, kidnapping, counterfeiting, and smuggling. The historical chapters are less convincing. Booth sweeps a large variety of secret societies into his catchall category of the Triads and reduces modern Chinese history to a vast and convoluted criminal conspiracy. Nevertheless, the cast of bizarre characters, the often-gory details of Triad crimes, and the intersection of the criminal and political worlds make for fascinating reading. A thrilling account of a true underworld empire

I have been an avid reader of books on true crime for quite a time. However, as far as books on organized crime went, until recently I concentrated on those dealing with the Mafia. I found this book almost by accident and thought for a long while. Certainly, I knew of the Triads, but was their full story worth reading? Eventually, I decided to buy Martin Booth's book. Dear heavens, what a good choice I made! The book proved to be a thrilling and captivating account of an underworld empire of whose actions and dealings we often hear, usually not realizing the existence of the powers behind them. It is truly fascinating - and once you read it, you will see a lot of things and events in today's world differently. Not only that; you will also have to take a different look at world's history, since the book - in a particularly fascinating and captivating part - shows the involvement of the Triads in major historical events, and the way they literally shaped a considerable part of the world. Thrilling and highly recommended, just for everyone, not only for those interested in true crime. And for the latter - a must read.

Important contribution to a critical global problem

One of the most vexing global problems today is gobal criminal capitalism, or international organized crime. Three years ago its gross revenues were estimated at $1.8 trillion. Today it is most likely to be over $2 trillion, annual, of which 50 percent or so is profits. The impact of their trade, which is narcotics based, on the moral fibre of people everywhere is incalculable. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand that this type of money translates into massive political, financial, legal, judicial, and law enforcement corruption in all countries, including the United States. So far, there has been too little attention placed on the Chinese Triads and their contribution. Dragon Syndicates is an excellent start towards filling the gap. Its history is excellent. It makes clear the reason organized crime exists is that it is politically protected and very rapidly becomes integrated with the political and financial structure. The weakness in the book is its failure to understand the present-day government involvement, especially in the case of China, which while it outlawed internal use of drugs in 1949, as described in the book, at the same time it nationalized the poppies and began using opium and heroin to undermine other societies, most notably Japan and the United States (See The Peking Bomb by Gerd Hamburger and Psycho-chemical Warfare by A.H Stanton Candlin). The State-Triads connection has grown and can now be seen in the marketing of designer drugs, produced in military labs, and in the coordination with the Yakusa, Mafia, and Russian Organized Crime, in which the intelligence services play a major role. The threat posed by international organized crime and the need to recognize and respond is clearly evident in the Dragon Syndicates. This book is especially useful in showing how tremendous the Triad-supported crime has grown in the United States since 1965, when immigration controls were significantly relaxed. This is especially apparent in places like New York, San Francisco, and the Pacific Northwest. The book is also excellent in showing the variety of activities -- from narcotics, to white slavery, loan sharking, pornography, arms sales, money laundering, and piracy of computer software. Compelling History With Significant Current Impact

The "Dragon Syndicates" is well written, compelling reading and detailed without being ponderous. Mr. Booth writes not only about the Chinese Triads and the many crimes that support their membership around the world, but also of the history of these secret societies.
From two thousand years ago, the author describes the beginnings of the Triads, the relationship they have had in the history of China as well as the rest of the world. I was amazed to learn of the significance of the Triads in the major political events throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
My practice as a Private Investigator in the upper levels of corporate issues and litigation has brought me into a familiarity of dealings with such issues as organized crime around the world. Many of the matters that corporations are faced with today must be viewed in the light of dealing with these crime syndicates.
I have also traveled in Hong Kong and Macau which are locations discussed in many aspects of this history of the Triads. And as such found it especially interesting to relate the places I have visited with their discussion in the book.
I very much recommend this book to anyone with an interest in global affairs, global crime or the history of China.

This book is the best companion for program

Being a complete novice using Inkscape, I am using this book page by page. It walks you through every aspect of the program. Finding and using this book and program is so very exciting, so much to learn, so much unleased creativity awaits me. I am having a great time. I am 57 years young, and proving you can teach an old girl new tricks. I plan to use this program and book to develope items for mixed media art.

Extremely helpful

I'm a new user to Inkscape 0.48. The book is well written, easy to follow, and contains many clarifying diagrams. With it, I've been able to quickly find answers to questions that eluded me via Google and Inkscape forum searches.

In the past, I worked exclusively with raster graphic editors. This book has made it easy to ramp up on vector fundamentals, like working with Bezier curves.

The author, an Inkscape programmer, provides background information to explain why certain features work the way they do. Being a programmer myself, I know how rare it is to get that kind of transparency. I appreciate those insights, because they highlight both the limitations and the possibilities offered by this very powerful graphics tool.

Though this book was published in 2009, everything I've tried works in the current 0.48 version of Inkscape. Newer features, like creating fonts, are not discussed in this book. I do look forward to buying an updated version of this book in the future.

Best Book on Inkscape that I know of

As far as I know it is the most complete book on Inkscape, it has very good detail as to how the program works. I've used this program for over two years and use it almost everyday, even though books can become outdated when it comes to subjects like this (I've had the book for almost two years) it still helps me to uncover tips, tricks and problems. The book is a very good primer in the use of Inkscape.

This book is profoundly comprehensive in dealing with its subject matter, covering every aspect from the details of a phone call to a customer for a specific purpose all the way up through the organisation to the strategic responsibilities of boardroom management. The well reasoned advice and specific do's and don'ts makes it crystal clear that Mr. Roff-Marsh has practiced what he preaches over many years and with many and varied companies and honed his approach into a proven business transformation methodology. I completely agree with another reviewer here that the book touches on much more than just sales.

I already had some knowledge of Theory of Constraints (TOC) which helped a lot, but this book lays out a particularly lucid path on how to implement Sales Process Engineering (SPE). Many books on TOC do not go as far with the nuances of the specific actions to take, and in which order, to ensure you begin to see the desired effects. I particularly liked how Mr. Roff-Marsh broadened the discussion by tying in the consequences of all manner of developments which have occurred since the Industrial Revolution and which explain why some of the things we take for granted are the way they are, not necessarily the way they should be.

The style of writing comes across as highly educated and the book flows extremely well from one subject to another. I really enjoyed reading it and I actually found a few passages "exciting" to see how they would turn out. Not the case studies, which might usually be the case, but the actual description of the process engineering steps themselves!

Mr. Roff-Marsh is very explicit on what is the "right" way and the "wrong" way which sat comfortably with me because the reasoned cause and effect logic is hard to argue with. Even though it seems just like common sense, it takes a strong vision and a firm approach to overcome inertia and implement real and lasting organisational change when there are many stakeholders involved. You won't have much luck sitting on the fence and there is none in this book. Consequently everything is specific and actionable.

I've seen sales done the traditional way (and done it myself when I had to) but after reading this book I can't imagine doing so again. With the SPE knowledge laid out in the book, not just what it is but how to do it, it would simply be illogical to persist with the traditional approach because the cause and effect relationships from your actions are completely missing. That is perhaps the most powerful part of the SPE approach. Everybody can see the effects of their actions and how their particular actions contribute to the whole system, including the fulfillment side of the business!

So, even if you've only read half this far, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The length of this review is testament to how much time I'm prepared to invest in promoting it. I consider Mr. Roff-Marsh a thought leader in his field and the knowledge he shares in this book is worth its cover charge plus your small time investment multiplied by thousands.

This book is sub-titled “a radical approach to the design of the sales function” and in many ways it clearly does what it promises. It shares the insights and observations of executives who have implemented the author’s idea about building “ridiculously efficient sales functions” around the world which lead to “market-dominating enterprises.”

The author has came up with some interesting analysis and perspective, noting that, for example, in the past couple of decades companies are producing far more than what they can sell and, at the same time, customers are becoming more and more resistant to traditional field sales representatives. The solution is to change the whole sales dynamic, letting salespeople earn fixed salaries and change their focus to sell conversations and solutions, mixed in with marketing and the engineering function. Heretical?

How about this extract to shock management? “Why is sales underperforming? One reason is that salespeople aren’t selling. A typical field salesperson performs just two business-development meetings a week. You read it right. Less than 10 per cent of a typical salesperson’s capacity is allocated to selling. And that figure is pretty standard across industries and across continents. The majority of a salesperson’s day is dedicated to customer service and administrative activities, to solution design and proposal generation, and to prospecting and fulfilment-related tasks.”

The book’s title is based on a metaphor to the author’s grand design, since sales would become the consequence of a number of interrelated processes rather than the output of a person. Salespeople become a component in a much larger machine (albeit an important component) in other words. Through the book the author will help the reader create their “smoothly functioning sales machine” as well as implement it within their organisation.

Often books like this can be difficult to evaluate; yet even if you don’t seize everything the book offers, there is a good chance that you’ll get some good takeaway points or discover an alternative perspective. It can be a bit of a heavy read due to its content and message, but a worthy read. Even if you don’t immediately get sold on the idea and reasons for change, maybe something will stick anyway that can be beneficial to your company’s sales efforts. It might be a case of revisiting the book on many occasions but one day you might be inspired to start and change things.

This review cannot state whether this programme would work for you, even though it makes a compelling argument to investigate change. It is worthy of a read and some consideration in any case. It is a lot better than many sales boosting-type books out there.

Brilliantly Written | Bold Ideas | Solid Guidance | Awesome Clarity of Thought

This book will challenge some of your deep rooted beliefs in sales and marketing. But at the same time it provides an step by step roadmap to transforming your sales function.

My first introduction to Sales Process Engineering(SPE) was when I watched an interview that Justin Roff-Marsh did for Mixergy sometime back - Mixergy provides business tips from proven entrepreneurs via interviews. Loved the clarity and the confidence with which Justin put forward his ideas. I have been following Justin Roff-Marsh ever since and I am so glad he published this book.

This book is a treat to read. In fact, it is a book to be studied not read. Justin lays out the inside-out sales model in great detail, fusing the Theory of Constraints with a powerful narrative and providing detailed guidance on how to implement this sales model. I also love the fact that Justin does not leave us with high level concepts, but takes it down to an implementation level. Justin is not shy to propose bold, controversial ideas. But these ideas are not hollow, they are backed by a sincere effort to explain the “Why” behind them. Case in point is Chapter 7: The End of Commissions, Bonuses and Other Artificial Management Stimulus. A highly controversial topic, but Justin brilliantly lays out his point of view.

When I usually read business books, I speed read some chapters that don’t appeal to me or sometimes I even skip them. No so with The Machine. In fact I had to pay extra attention to what I was reading so that I could absorb the concepts and at times very curious to know where this was going. This book is a guide for entrepreneurs, sales and marketing leaders who wish to grow their business in today’s marketplace.

For marketing leaders this book should an eye opener. The hard work involved in crafting effective promotions, the illusive nature of CRM benefits and the ever challenging question on how to qualify leads for sales are some of the topics Justin tackles head-on in this book. I can already visualize how our firms’ marketing and sales can function in this new model. The book has the capacity to paint that vivid picture for you.

I hope and trust that you learn more about these concepts of Sales Process Engineering (SPE) and I would highly encourage you to read this book. Have you ever bought a new car and then suddenly you start seeing the same model at every corner of the road? Similarly after you have read The Machine, you will not be able to see a traditional sales and marketing function without the SPE lens.
