I feel the most torn about this book than any others I've read in a while. The writing, as promised in the blurb, was reminiscent of Moyes. However, where Kavanagh missed the mark in this book that Moyes is a master at is having sympathetic characters that you are rooting for and truly love. The book sort of dragged on for me. Kim and Harry are the two MC's. Harry is Eva's best friend but Kim thinks their a couple and despises him. The whole book there;s this back and forth between Kim and Harry, with him teasing her (he truly loved her) and Kim just being plain mean. I didn't and couldn't sympathize with her. In fact, I liked Harry and couldn't understand why he'd like such a mean-spirited person. She NEVER gave him the benefit of the doubt, and just when you thought she might turn a corner and grow as a person/character she didn't. She stayed the same Kim. Ignorant, immature, and unable to see outside of herself. I kept reading hoping that Harry and Kim (who you knew both truly had feelings for each other but just couldn't show them) would connect finally. Just at the end when Harry admits the truth to her and she realizes things were not always as they seemed, and you think they might finally get together, but the books ends. Just. Like. That. There is no resolution. The author only delivers the beginning of it and just ends the book, depriving the reader of the ending they really needed. Very disappointing.
Actually, up until the ending, I was going to give it at least 3 stars, but with it ending the way it did. I just can't. This author has huge potential as long as she doesn't continue to let readers down and can write more likable characters.

"Don't Get Me Wrong" by Marianne Kavanagh is essentially about the relationship of the sisters Eva and Kim throughout the years. Eva's best friend Harry is always tagging along and constantly annoying Kim.
When Eva gets sick, Kim and Harry are forced to spend more and more time with each other.
Not a Light Read! This NOT Chick-Lit
It's a very tough book to rate. There is just something about Kavanagh's writing that sucks you in every single time. I just couldn't stop reading.
The thing with Kavanagh is that her books seem like cute little contemporary romances that you can read quickly and forget almost as quickly - but in reality they are so much more. Every other page there are sentences that make you want to put the book down and think about it for a while. I could impossibly just read this in a day. I found myself going back and forth all the time because I wanted to avoid overseeing something important. It's just insane how she casually throws in similes that leave you baffled all the time.

Again, the story is told over several years to establish the relationship between disillusioned socialist Kim and rich banker Harry.
What worked very well in "For Once in My Life" just isn't as charming in "Don't Get Me Wrong" anymore. I didn't like the time jumps and had a huge problem with the shifts in perspective.
In general my biggest issue with this is that the novel absolutely lacks direction. I didn't feel like every scene contributed to bringing the story forward. Sometimes Kim would ramble on endlessly and lose herself in comparisons, and the next second there is a cut and you'll find yourself thrown into the next scene. While I do love Kim's rambles and snickered about her comments, this makes it very hard to follow the story. Just like "For Once in My Life", this is absolutely a character-driven book.
Great Character Dynamics!
While I'm not a fan of the pace, I loved the characters. I'm just a sucker for anything along the lines of hate turns into love. Smug Harry and sarcastic Kim, who just can't stop talking about how much she hates him, are a match made in heaven. Their relationship makes up for every other thing that I didn't like as much.
It's flat out hilarious how you can tell from the beginning that Kim has a giant crush on Harry. It's even funnier when you get to Harry's point-of-view and realize that isn't even aware how much influence he has on Kim. You just have to love these two.
The same goes for the relationship between Eva and Kim. I love how Kavanagh builds the novel on the premise that Harry and Kim have nothing in common aside from their unconditional love for Eva. It really translates in the writing.

Witty, cozy, and heart-breaking. Kavanagh's characters steal my heart every single time.
When reading Kavanagh's writing, I always feel at home. The reason why I'm such a fan of her books is that I've never read anything like this before. Her style is completely unique.
I've recommended her debut "For Once in My Life" a lot to romance lovers, just because it stands out in the flood of clich� romance novels with characters that you'll forget very easily.
If you love romance and character-driven writing and aren't shy to try out something new, I'll recommend "Don't Get Me Wrong" to you as well. Even though this one lacks in pace, her characters will stay with you for a long time.

and most importantly the love and respect of Kim's adored sister

Essentially abandoned by their parents when growing up, sisters Kim and Eva react very differently to their situation, with Kim refusing assistance and resentful of anyone who seems to be privileged and Eva accepting of anything and anyone that comes her way. When Harry comes into Eva's teenage life Kim has found someone on whom she can put all her resentments and anger, especially since she thinks he could take her sister away from her. Smooth-talking smiling Harry seems to have it all: a high-paying job in the City, modern high-rise apartment, Porsche, and most importantly the love and respect of Kim's adored sister. Kim can't understand what free-spirt hippie Eva wants with a friend like Harry. Over the course of many years Harry is always there, and when Eva becomes pregnant he jumps in with financial support, further irritating Kim, who has graduated from university and now works for a non-profit agency helping the homeless. When Eva becomes seriously ill, Kim swallows her pride and tolerates Harry's presence as he takes Eva on outings, helps care for Otis and makes her sister's life easier.
Don't Get Me Wrong is being touted as a modern Pride and Prejudice, and I can agree with some caveats. In this book it seems Kim has all the pride and prejudices. While Harry enjoys provoking her, he doesn't start until she becomes intolerably rude. Kim is also very passionate about humanitarian causes, the state of the world, and helping others, to the point where she is blind to everything else. She comes across as having no sense of humor or sense of fun, even when with her long-time friends. It would have been nice to see behaviors that were more light-hearted and would explain why people like her as opposed to admiring. Kim is also insecure in her relationship with long-time boyfriend Jake, allowing him to passively belittle her and make all the decisions in their relationship.
Some people may see Don't Get Me Wrong as funny and others as insightful as Kim and Eva build their own family of friends across the country, but I felt depressed after reading, thinking about all the years Kim wasted with her prejudices, assuming things were the way they looked instead of asking questions and finding out that her perceptions all along were wrong. I've read several books lately where the characters' lives would have been so much better if they had better communication skills, so that could be why it hit me so hard. Plus, if it weren't for misunderstandings there wouldn't have been a story! Marianne Kavanaugh's writing is strong and the dialog is believable. The story is well-plotted with some flashbacks and a slow reveal of characters. I think I would have liked this more if I had read it a month ago, so give it a try if the synopsis appeals to you.
