This is an exceptionally entertaining way to learn about the physics of basketball and get a few pointers at the same time!

If you think that the key to being a good basketball player is simply a bit of athletic ability and height, you might want to rethink that theory. There really is a lot of "science" to the game and in this book you're going to be introduced to it ... in a fun way of course. You're going to learn about such terms as momentum, friction, force, gravity, kinetic energy, and several other terms and how they relate to the game and its players. Many of these terms directly relate to physics, a subject that most youngsters would rather avoid than embrace, but when you combine them with basketball the subject actually is of high interest.

Take for example the basketball itself. Combined with the skill of the player, the way the ball bounces can be a make or break key to winning a game. In order to keep the playing field level and fair, the International Basketball Federation (IBF) has specific requirements the ball must meet in the "bounce" department. You'll be able to read about why the ball bounces and learn why "air molecules" are the key to the process. You'll also learn the reason NBA players prefer a leather ball over a synthetic one.

There are a few little "secrets" that can be had by reading this book. You'll get to take a look at why getting an arc on the ball and putting backspin on your free throw can actually help you. You'll learn about dribbling (momentum), you'll watch Chris Paul race down the court (mass vs. weight), you'll learn why a wrist snap is effective (static friction force), what happens when that ball is up in the air (revolution), you'll learn about hitting the trey (resistance force, effort force, fulcrum), and you'll learn many other interesting facets about the game of basketball and, by default, physics!

This is an exceptionally entertaining way to learn about the physics of basketball and get a few pointers at the same time. Most of us would think that this type of book would be quite boring, but I found it to be quite the opposite. I've read one other in this series, "Baseball: How it Works," and found that to be of high interest as well. In this book we get to see many of the NBA's best players at work and find out the physics of the sport as we go. There are small sidebars that point out exactly what is happening in an action scene. One of the most interesting ones was when Troy Murphy collided with Marreese Speights. You'll get to learn about kinetic energy when you take a look at that smash up. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional book and Internet sites to explore via FactHound.

Great for anyone that talks

We met Doug Stevenson in person at a workshop. In a matter of just a few hours, we learned more than we had in the last year at other workshops. This book will give you the same information (although you'll miss his running around the stage) as we gained in the workshop. Well worth the read for anyone that speaks for a living, or just speaks to their friends.

Grandma comes to the rescue when she gives him her late husband's riding lawn mower and he starts mowing a few yards in the neighborhood. Within a month, he has 15 people working for him and more business than he can handle. Arnold, one of his customers and a home-based stock broker, invests some of the boy's earnings not only in the stock market but also in a prizefighter, helping him earn thousands of dollars. Gary Paulsen's enjoyable novel (Wendy Lamb Books, 2007) also offers lessons on how a free-market economy works, buffered by lots of wacky humor and the inclusion of improbable and unexpected events. Tom Parks does an excellent job of conveying the innocence and unbridled enthusiasm of the young man. However, the protagonist sounds younger than 12 and a Latino character sounds somewhat robotic. Quick reading fun along with some lessons in Economics aimed at the ~9-13 year old age bracket.

Lawn Boy was one of a number of Summer reading books chosen for reading by our 10 year old prior to 6th grade; a grade or two above or below would be this book's target audience based on content and reading level.
Lawn Boy deals with the story of an unnamed 12 year-old's birthday gift of a used lawn mower and how a series of interactions while mowing lawns allows the boy to parlay his mowing money into a small fortune. The economic concepts are sound and relatable - if not a bit unbelievable in how they all pan out - but overall, Gary Paulsen writes a fun, quick reading book that both my boy, and I, enjoyed. A minor nitpick, this book does have the main character dealing with some issues in some questionable ways (having a business foe beaten up, hiring undocumented labor, paying off-the-books, etc.) but its themes, lessons and viewpoints speak well to a tween or early teenager. The content does not contain anything any reasonably unsheltered kid would be put off by.

Wonderful Book - even for older kids and adults!

I am an 8th grade business technology teacher. The book is intended for 5-6th grade. However, this is a true gem of a book that can be made relevant to a diverse audience from all backgrounds and almost all ages. I loved reading the book as an adult. It is an interesting, inspiring, and easy read. It can be applied to so many real life scenarios, the opportunities are more than plentiful! I am glad I picked up this book and will have a smile on my face every time I look at it on my shelf. Don't hesitate to get this book - it's worth it!

Gary Paulsen, as an author was recommended to us by my son's fifth grade teacher. After reading "Mudshark" on his own, I was intrigued to find other books by this author. I came across "Lawn Boy" which appealed to both my son and I after his interest in starting his own business. This was a great read. We laughed, we talked about business on a level far above 5th grade, and even got some math practice in! Would recommend this book, and this author to anyone having trouble getting your child 'into' reading.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this series but fell in love reading the first book pluck is an awesome h there's not really a hero in this book just an ignorant selfish prince who can't make his mind I do hope pluck gets more happiness even tho she's the main character and the hero/heroine she goes through so many horrible situations I feel for her I almost cried reading this book looking forward to reading more

If your interested in the "LAW"

I didn't buy this book for me, but for my son, as he was showing an interest in Law of some kind. When I looked through all that there was on Amazon, it was like WOW, where do I start? At the beginning of course. I figured he needed to know where we got our rules and laws in the United States. This book sounded ok. I was first worried it being to much for him to understand right off, but such was not the case. He said it was perfect! A friend of his is taking college courses in law for being a "Paralegal", and he wishes that he had that book to start off with. He told my son, that he wanted to read it as soon as my son was finished. The friend also told my son, that he wished that he started with something like this book. So I guess I made the right choice!

Superb history - if you can read it

This is, in my opinion, the best single volume history of American law (I'm a graduate of Harvard Law School and have taught law at schools in the US and abroad). But the print is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it. It should be in two or even three volumes, but of course it would then be much more expensive. So if you have keen eyesight, or a good magnifying glass, this is a great book.

This book is a masterpiece of scholarship. It covers the law of the United from origins to contemporary times, thourgh clearly defined chapters/sections and very lucid writing. To any person interested in American law and/or history, this is a must read.

About the Author
Don Keith is an award-winning broadcaster, a best-selling author, and has been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1961. He was first licensed as WN4BDW in 1961, earned his General class license later that year, and then became an Amateur Extra class licensee in the mid-1970s, changing the call sign to N4KC. He was twice named Billboard Magazine’s “Broadcast Personality of the Year,” won every major broadcast journalism award in his state from the Associated Press and United Press International, and was an on-air personality, journalist, station owner, program director, and manager in a broadcasting career that spanned over two decades. Don published his first novel, The Forever Season, in 1995. It has remained in print continuously since and was named “Fiction of the Year” by the Alabama Library Association. His more than two dozen other published works, fiction and non-fiction, cover such topics as NASCAR racing, broadcasting, college sports, submarines, biography, and World War II history. Don lives in Indian Springs, Alabama, with his wife, Charlene, has three grown children, and three grandchildren. He operates all the shortwave amateur radio bands as well as VHF and uses most modes, including CW, SSB, PSK31 and FM. He enjoys DXing, contesting, antenna experimenting, and just plain rag-chewing. This ref. guide has been helpful. After reading the chapter in the Civil PE review book, this gives the highlights that will most likey be used for the exam. It's also nice to have the two references side by side for equations and tables so you don't have to flip between pages in one or the other.

Completely not worth the price

I was extremely shocked at how thin this book was and how little information and help this book provided me to prepare and use as a reference on the PE exam. During the whole exam, there was absolutely nothing in this book that was useful. Best advice I can give someone taking the PE exam and doing the construction depth is get a NCEES sample test. The questions from the sample test were the most similar in topics and difficulty as the actual exam. The CERM provided some help; however, this book did not. Save your money and avoid buying this.
