~~Incredible Continuation/Not a 'Torgon' Let Down~~

This is an incredible continuation to 'The Last Librarian'. The year is 2101 and the search is on for Grandyn Happerman. He is a TreeRunner who is wanted more than any of the others due to his past history.. It has been 3 years since the government cracked down in what is known as the Doneharvest.

The problem that a reader sometimes encounters in a continuation series is what may be called 'torgon let downs' with the plot, characters, or the action. In this one I believe there is more intense action than in the first one. The plot takes multiple twists and turns along the pages. And, the author delves more deeply into the characters so the reader understands them more. Take Grandyn, for example. Truly amazing how this character has evolved in this book. And, Munna has turned into a wealth of wisdom. She can feel the prophesies and her words ring true throughout. Her statement 'the only constant in the universe is change' fit so well in this novel. The fact that she can tap into universal consciousness speaks volumes about her. Truth is about living according to Munna and violence is not an answer. ( 'Torgon' is a word coined in this series).

How to describe this book for a prospective reader is indeed a task. First of all, there is an aspect of forgiveness that is an underlying current throughout. Some really neat tech devices will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat including one called a 'tru-chair'. The search for the books continue and there is a code that must be broken to figure out a meaning. Toss in the Imps once more along with some CHRUDEs for some added excitement.

Lots more in this one and am anxious to read the next part.

A future science fiction classic

Good science fiction creates a visual world the reader can escape into. That’s why we read. Author Brandt Legg skillfully accomplishes this. The story moves forward quickly, beginning with the first line, without any off-point rambling sidebars. Descriptions are there for the reader and not just the passing thoughts of the author (a mistake that many authors make). I had the feeling when reading The Lost TreeRunner that the author never sat down and struggled to write it. Like a great musical composition, The Lost TreeRunner is that rare work that seems as if it was born or blossomed naturally, kind of like a Beatles song. Legg creates a believable world with fascinating visual images and visionary, futuristic technology. When reading, take a moment to consider some of the futuristic technology that Legg offers as a possibility in the not-too-distant future.

Although I do recommend reading the first book in The Justar Journal series, The Last Librarian, there is enough background in the first chapter so that you don’t have to read the series in sequence. Book One focused on Grandyn’s father Runit who was literally the last librarian before the oppressive Aylantik government outlawed historical truth by outlawing libraries. Book two focuses on Runit’s son Grandyn, a TreeRunner who is brought into the revolt by the death of his father and girlfriend Vida.

I agree with what one of the other reviewers wrote about series books. Sometimes a series will start out good and become a “let down” as it progresses into subsequent books. Hunger Games is a good example. Book one was amazing, book two was good and book three was a huge “let down.” Not so with Legg’s Justar Journal series. The main character in book two is highly motivated by the death of his father and girlfriend, making him an exciting and interesting protagonist. Simply put, this fun and exciting future science fiction classic is a page turner and definitely deserves a 5-star rating.

Intense and complicated

I absolutely loved the first book, The Last Librarian. This one focuses on finding the key to understanding the prophecies after gathering all the stolen books. There is more death and violence than in the previous book, which is probably why I'm not enjoying it quite as much. There are so many players after the same thing but each with their own agenda, some of which are not entirely clear, that it can be a bit confusing.

Tons of action, tons of surprises, tons of thinking and speculating. Even more crazy technology and more human "enhancements".

Though I liked the first book better, I just purchased the third book to see how it all comes together. The series does make me wonder what our world would be like if we were less materialistic and more like Munna and Cope.

Peace must prevail, always.

Solid book for the serious artist.

Just a few months out of student life on the rolling green lawns of Haverford College, Philip Fretz was living in a small, remote West African city amid insect invasions, deadly snakes and coups. It was the tumultuous 1960s, in both the United States and Africa, and he had become an early recruit to the Peace Corps, founded in 1961. He was the first volunteer to be sent to teach English at the Kenema Technical Institute in Sierra Leone, a former British colony that had been left in stark poverty and underdevelopment when colonialism ended. Half a century later, he began to pore through the diaries he had kept, sporadically, during those two years in Kenema. When his father died in 1998, relatives found in his papers all the letters Philip had written home to his parents, recording his illnesses, his extraordinary adventures across West Africa, and the pain he felt watching his students struggle amid poverty and tribalism, in bare-bones classrooms without books and supplies, while keeping alive their hopes that they could have a brighter future.

Fascinating

In this well-written memoir, Fretz provides a fascinating account of his service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone in the late 1960s. During a tumultuous time that saw anti-war protests and race riots at home, and multiple coups in Sierra Leone within the course of his two years there, Fretz was able to make a small contribution, as an English teacher and ad hoc softball coach at the Technical Institute (trade school) in Kenema.. As his journal and his letters home demonstrate, he was a keen observer, and his accounts of traveling for hours by lorry on unpaved roads, or finding a deadly green mamba snake underneath the table at his house, or participating in a dance festival underline the reality of his situation: he, as were most Peace Corps volunteers, was sent to a small, underdeveloped town with little training and few resources at his disposal. It's a testament to his own strength of spirit that even as he became aware of the Peace Corps' idealistic facade, he was able to connect so well with his students and show that he really cared about their wellbeing. Highly recommended!

This book brought back memories of my 2 Peace Corps years in Sierra Leone in the 1960's. It was light pleasant reading. I would recommend it to anyone who has lived in Sierra Leone for any length of time. I was told to keep a daily diary while there and now regret not doing so.

The author should be paying you to proofread his book

"In his book entitled ____ author ______ ..." This familiar pattern, with its familiar missing comma, is used to introduce each and every one of the books published by Make Profits Easy LLC in every single one of their blurbs. This book is quite possibly the worst book I have bought in years. I think many of the other reviewers may be astroturfing.

Awkward language, misused words, amateur writing style, awful font, nonstandard punctuation, and no paragraph justification leave me little faith that the author gave proper treatment to his epic topic. The chapter on World War I is 9 paragraphs long. Not pages. Paragraphs. But the font is so huge and there's so much white space, he managed to get a few pages out of it.

I have no faith in the content of this book, and indeed I fear I may have become stupider reading it.

Who is the author of this terrible tome? Beats me. They don't bother to describe Phillip J. Smith's qualifications. Nothing in the book is footnoted nor sourced. Oh, it does have 5-book bibliography, although it doesn't specify what information came from which. I really doubt that Smith added any original value at all through his telling, as he's obviously not a professional historian, so you might as well get his supposed source books instead. They are:

A major ripoff and con

The worst piece of writing I have ever encountered. For more details about this miserable excuse for a scholarly piece of work see the other reviwers who judgedthis to be worthy of one or zero stars. I gave up after 4 chapters and then, on reading other reviwers discovered that information I was not alone in my displeasure. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR VALUABLE TIME.

The writer disappoints on every level. A dry recitation of facts. No context, no color, and no characters developed. Boring enough to make you sleep through a train wreck. It's not as bad as it could be, the book is short enough that any damage incurred from reading it is likely to be temporary. The book is published by --- Make Profits Easy LLC. Wow. 210 pages with big font size, double spaced, triple space between paragraphs, big indents at paragraphs and about 22 lines per page. No right justify of text along with no hyphenation combine to create even more white space. My copy of text has a two letter white strip down the length of the odd number page from page 5 through page 115. The quality of the printing matched the writing.
The only redeeming feature I can discern is that it is a very quick read (not many words to read).
I realize I may not be entirely correct in my assessment of this piece of work, it could be even worse than I have indicated.

Fascinating Pedagogic Approach

This book is very well written. It is distinctive in its approach and deserves careful consideration. Study this one after,
or in parallel with, the traditional undergraduate course to appreciate its charms. Emphasis is historical throughout,
but not detrimental to the physics content. Derivations leave few intermediate steps, allowing for painless access to
mathematical methods which might be new to the prospective reader: Dirac Delta Functions, Separation of Variables,
Series Solutions and Calculus of Variations ,just a few of the examples which spring to mind.
Chapters include, sequentially: Wave Propagation (includes a short section on higher dimensional waves), Fourier Series,
Geometrical Optics (ending with Euler-Lagrange), Dynamics review in preparation to the next on Hamilton-Jacobi Theory,
Schrodinger Equation, Foundations, Hydrogen Atom (following Pauli) Perturbation Theory, and much more besides.
The Twenty pages of Chapter (Ten) of Harmonic Oscillators (" the queen of Quantum Mechanical problems" , the author writes)
is as thorough and innovative as one is likely to come across at such a middling level.
Ninth Chapter, WKB Approximation, is as thorough, as painless, as one is likely to peruse at this elementary a level !
Problems at Chapter endings are straightforward, some provided with hints to aid in their solution.
A wonderfully informative textbook; pitched at the same mathematical maturity as the usual undergraduate offerings.
However, this one differs from those offerings in following an historical path chartered by Schrodinger's original papers.
Schrodinger's "Collected Papers On Wave Mechanics" inspired the present volume, as noted by the author.
( However, Heisenberg's matrix methods--the Author "..of great theoretical significance"-- are given nice exposition.)
Thus, embodied within these pages, an interesting, thought-provoking, yet introductory, approach.
The author is painstaking in revealing intermediate mathematical steps and does not allow linguistic ambiguity to mar the discussion.
(As examples: One will not find Correspondence Principle listed in the index. Pages 240-245, Uncertainty Principle, are as
accurate a representation, physically and mathematically, as one is likely to read at this level, nothing to 'unlearn' later !).
Finally,quoting from the review in (Vol.36,P.769,1968) American Journal of Physics: "...it appears that this volume will be a
useful addition to the long list of books with similar titles, both as a basis for advanced undergraduate courses and for individual study."
