I think for those who haven't played the game as much as I have it can be a big help. For people like me it still helps keep the information organized.

This book provided great insights into how big data is applied across many industries. Its easy to read and each page confirms to a standardised template making it simple to use as a reference book.

I would recommend this book to those new to big data as an initial starting point to its many applications. This book is otherwise to light on information to those that already have hands on experience and wants to dig deeper.

Great high level summaries, but very little detail

If you're looking for a very simple overview of how big data is being put to use then this is the right book. I was hoping for more details than were available in this particular volume. The stories are high level summaries that take between 5-10 minutes each to read. This is great if all you're looking for is anecdotal information about big data so you can talk to others about the topic. If you're looking to truly learn about big data and the technology that helps us take advantage of it I think you'd need to find another book.

Given the cost of the book I'm surprised at the content inside of it. It is definitely not worth 30 dollars. If you're fortunate enough to have a work subscription to something like Safari Books etc. check that out, it might be included free.

About the Author

James F. Cox III, Ph.D, CFPIM, CIRM, holds TOCICO certifications in Production and Supply Chain, Performance Measurement, Critical Chain, Strategy and Tactics, and Thinking Processes. He is a Jonah’s Jonah, Professor Emeritus, and was the Robert O. Arnold Professor of Business in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. Prior to his tenure at UGA, Dr. Cox held the E. L. Lowder Professorship in the School of Business at Auburn University.

John G. Schleier, Jr., holds TOCICO certifications in all disciplines. He was President and Chief Operating Officer of the Mortgage Services Division of Alltel, Inc., Executive Vice President of Computer Power, Inc., and Director of Office Systems and Data Delivery for IBM, where he directed major software development projects, sales administration, and financial functions. Mr. Schleier served on the faculty of The University of Georgia Terry College of Business Administration as IBM Executive in Residence and as Executive Professor of Management.

A most useful volume

I have been working with Theory of Constraints concepts and methods since 1989 when I discovered "The Goal" by Dr Eli Goldratt. Since "The Goal" many books have been published by Dr. Goldratt and other practitioners. Up until now the most practical way to learn and understand the basic ideas and practices of TOC was to acquire those books. I was almost reluctant to buy this handbook thinking that my library of over 40 books was sufficient. However, I couldn't resist, I bought it.

It's a big book in many ways. It is over 1100 pages and covers TOC in a systematic and complete manner from philosophy to basic concepts to practical checklists and formats for using the tools. The chapters are written by people who have been influential in originating and putting into practice TOC methods. It is not just a compendium of their older work, it contains much that is new and written specifically for this volume. Efrat Goldratt-Ashlag's chapter on 'The Layers of Resistance - The Buy-In Process According to TOC' will change the way you think about, not only how you work with your customers but also how you conduct yourself in other relationships. This chapter alone was worth the price of the book for me. Lisa Scheinkopf's chapter on "Thinking Processes Including S&T Trees' is like a guided tour through the process of diagnosing what is keeping an enterprise from achieving its goals right through to developing a strategy for success.

You will be a better consultant, manager, or person after reading Dr. Goldratt's introduction and the two chapters I mentioned above.

1100 pages is a lot to read. So far I have only sampled in the rest of the book but everything I have read has been clear, accessible, and useful.

All the details... but only the wrong ones.

The book is very hit-or-miss; as each chapter was written by a different person, and the readability varies immensely. Generally, it is bearable, but something of a slog.

It is insufficiently edited. I found at least one error every five pages or so, and this is on a simple reading; I'm not looking for them,they just leap out at me, distracting me from the text.

And the text really could use some distraction; One or two of the chapters are really just the vaguest of descriptions, while others go into the minutest details on points ...that don't actually tell you much about implementation. Every SINGLE term in the book is abbreviated, and the abbreviations are NOT always explicated.

What every chapter seems to have in common is multiple links to the website of its author. Now normally, that's a good thing. Normally it's GREAT when the author cares enough to keep adding to the book even after it goes to the publisher; adding tips and tricks, clearing up common misreadings that the readers ask about... Not here. Here, half the links are dead, one used to lead to a piece of their COMMERCIAL software (which, by the way, has moved), and the rest lead to the TOC official site, where one may buy e-copies of the individual chapters. Yes, that's right; The book has links... to buy another copy of this book.

Chapter 25 specifically sends you to that site a half-dozen times. "For an example of this completely vague thing I've just failed to describe, go to Appendix G, at http://". Following the link does not lead to Appendix G, but to another $6.95 version of THE STUPID CHAPTER I'M ALREADY READING, with no Appendix G to be found.

I'm used to textbooks being poorly written. I'm even used to TOC books being unevenly edited. But I'm NOT used to TOC books being confusingly written. After reading "The Goal" (multiple editions), "It's Not Luck", "Isn't It Obvious", "Necessary But Not Sufficient", "Critical Chain", "The Haystack Syndrome" AND "What Is This Thing Called The Theory of Constraints", I had a certain level of expectation. But that expectation, for the first time ever, was not met.

If you MUST check this out for completeness, get the much dreaded Chapter 25 online, as it is the only source I've seen for the Strategy and Tactics Tree, and then go back and reread It's Not Luck, taking careful notes. Flipping through this, it almost feels like Dr Goldratt would prefer you to do exactly that.

Best handbook I have now

I have had many handbooks over the years. Some were good and most were lacking. This has to be the best handbook I have read. The sections cover topics such as supply chain, quality and project management, just to name a few. There is enough detail from implementation in each section. Even with different authors, there is not overlap of material. The language and diagrams are consistent throughout the handbook, which can be difficult when different authors are involved. Each section is written by a LEADER of TOC. I also like the appendix that points to other books that might be helpful if more detail is needed. I would recommend this handbook for all levels of knowledge of TOC.

Shafiullah Khan is an assistant professor at the Institute of InformationTechnology (IIT) at the Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST), K.P.K, Pakistan. His research interests include wireless mesh networks, ad hoc networks, sensor networks, and wireless network security. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Communication Networks and Information Security (IJCNIS).

Al-Sakib Khan Pathan is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Malaysia. He is also the founding head of the NDC laboratory at the Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT), IIUM. His research interests include wireless sensor networks, network security, and e-services technologies. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal on Internet and Distributed Computing Systems (IJIDCS).

Nabil Ali Alrajeh is an associate professor of medical informatics in the Biomedical Technology Department at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Walsh started posting his altered strips at garfieldminusgarfield.net. And in an act that definitely qualifies him for the good sport hall of fame, Davis not only didn't sue him but approved of the project. This collection of the best de-Garfielded strips prints Walsh's altered cartoons next to Davis's originals; Davis even throws in a couple dozen Garfield-minus-Garfield strips he's done himself. Interestingly, Davis's stabs at the concept are mostly just gags about Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle. The gist of Walsh's approach, on the other hand, is to completely alter Davis's jokes—a strip in which Garfield displays a single hair, announces this is all I'll be shedding today and marches off before Jon delivers a punch line, after Walsh gets through with it, becomes two panels of Jon silently glancing around before haplessly declaring, I dread tomorrow. About the Author
Jim Davis�was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other). The�Garfield�strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in forty-one U.S. newspapers. Today it’s syndicated in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide with more than 200 million readers, leading Guinness World Records to name�Garfield�The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World. Davis has had many successes with�Garfield,�including four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998), but his most prized awards are from his peers in the National Cartoonist Society: Best Humor Strip (1981 and 1985), the Elzie Segar Award (1990), and the coveted Reuben Award (1990) for overall excellence in cartooning.

Garfield Minus Garfield... minus the laughs? Not a chance!

Let me get this out of the way first: I am a huge fan of the Garfield Minus Garfield website [...]. In retrospect, I am surprised noboby had thought of it earlier; Jon Arbuckle was talking to a cat this whole time, and with Garfield's removal, Jon's sad, lonely life becomes shockingly apparent. Some strips make Jon appear depressed, while others, he appears to be losing his mind. For almost a year now, Dan Walsh has been removing Garfield from the strips, and I cannot thank him enough for making me laugh with nearly every new update. Essentially, I felt I owed it to him to purchase this book.

Fast forward to the present, where Jim Davis (the creator of Garfield) has embraced Walsh's work and creativity, eventually leading onto the release of this book. In glorious colour and with entertaining, interesting written remarks by the two creative talents, I had nothing but huge anticipation for getting my hands on it.

What surprised me is that the majority of the book contain Garfield Minus Garfield strips already featured on the website, shown against the original comic (where Garfield and others are still present). This is not a bad thing at all; it is obvious that the strips were handpicked with care, essentially leaving us with a 'best of' from the archive found on the Internet. Whether Jon is talking to sock puppets, splattering ice cream into his face, or contemplating how he has wasted his life, you'll laugh yourself to death reading them. It's a great way for those new to the edited strips to get into the craze, or for current fans to revisit their favourites.

At the end of the book are Garfield Minus Garfield strips that Jim Davis himself is responsible for. These strips, while not quite on par with Walsh's work, are still quite amusing, and certainly a commendable effort.

Garfield Minus Garfield is simply a brilliant concept, and has finally received justice by being published into a book. I hope that it sells well, and I hope that you enjoy reading it. And who knows? Maybe you'll see a bit of yourself in Jon Arbuckle's life... although I sure hope not!

He wasn't there all along

Taking Garfield out of "Garfield" is a clever concept, and also a pretty insightful recognition that -- as with Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts," but on a much less profound level -- there's an awful lot of sadness at the heart of this strip. When you start from the premise that cats can't talk, and that therefore Jon never shares in Garfield's interior monologue or the (alleged) punchlines of the jokes, all you're left with is a man struggling with failure, rejection, and the occasional runaway electric toothbrush. It's kind of like The Book of Bunny Suicides. Funny, but also a disturbing.

But not to get too heavy. "Garfield" is still a comic strip, and there are a few laughs to be found here. What I am particularly impressed by, though, is not only Jim Davis' ability to see the joke, but also his willingness to run with it instead of sending in the intellectual-property attorneys with cease-and-desist orders. That raises him quite a bit in my estimation. Of course, in keeping with the spirit of the Big Orange Cat Empire, Davis is making a buck off this book -- it's his name in the byline, with Dan Walsh, the guy who had the insightful recognition in the first place, granted but a Foreword. Still, for "Garfield" fans who want to see the strip in a new, and perhaps unsettling, way, or for readers who enjoy a sort of meta-analysis of a long-running media presence, "Garfield Minus Garfield" has a surprising amount going for it.

Love the comic, hate the book

There's one, big, (and for me, crippling) problem with this book: Every page shows the "minus Garfield" version (which is why you bought the book.) But it ALSO shows the original version just below it.

It's like showing how to do a magic trick right after doing it. Or explaining a simple joke right after telling it. It badly undermines the humor and character of the main event.

"Just don't look!" you might say. But your periphery vision is such that you can SEE that there's missing content, and your brain (or mine, anyway) has to either (a) work distractingly hard to avoid it or (b) find out what the missing content is.

I hate to complain about this book, because I really LOVE the web comic. But I find this book unreadable, presumably due to a bad, egotistical or lawyer-related decision.

A reference for any serious Indian enthusiast

For true enthusiasts, motorcycling litterature is often far too general. This particular book from Jerry Hatfield takes the opposite approach. It is not only about Indian, but Indian Chief motorbikes exclusively. As a result, you get only the information you need, year after year, including the original color schemes from the factory documents. A lot of good pictures of restored bikes add to the information. This is perhaps my only minor objection: more original photographic material would completely close the case. Hatfield preferred to address this in his equally important book, a photographic history of Indian motorcycles. If you want to properly restore an Indian, do not start before you have read these two books. If you simply love these bikes but don't intend to ever own one, "Indian Motorcycles" will be a better choice.

Well worth a read...

A well illustrated and very interesting book which gives the full historical background to the development of this iconic motocycle. A lot of technical detail for the restorer, but wade through this and there are fascinating insights into the development of American motor culture, the expansion of metalled roads, petrol stations and motels, all required background to the motocycles themselves and how they were marketed. For once a book thats more than just a history of oil pumps!

This is a great retrospective of Indian brand motorcyles. The photos are top notch. The writting is on target and Hatfield has done his research. A must for all motorcycle enthusiasts.
