Great Advice for Photographing Children

I am a big fan of Tamara Lackey, and I enjoyed this book. I really like how her personality comes through in her writing and her photographs. She understands children and explains how to deal with various (sometimes difficult) situations that arise when photographing them. She also shows how to tell a story and bring out personalities with your photographs. If you like to get children outside in a fun environment and create life-style photographs and memories for clients, then this is a great book for you. It could also be helpful in studio situations too I guess, even though those photos are seem posed and stiff sometimes. Tamara's approach to photographing children is practical and she comes across as relatable. She explains how to connect with children, make them feel at ease, and draw out their little personalities. She explains how to do this, and at the same time, remain professional throughout the entire process. I think this book is great for anyone who expects to photograph children in their photography business. She offers very practical advice.

Good for those beginning their business in the field

The book gives a general overview of what to expect and how to go about pursuing this genre of photography. Currently in my first year pursuing my own path as a children's photographer, I was hoping for some more in-depth material related to the title but as stated earlier it's all very general. I figure if one is just starting out this information would be useful in helping to guide them. If you've had a good few months of effort with test shoots and actual sessions along with having gone through the process of defining your business plan and structuring yourself for success the information here may not be as informative.

Entertaining, Educational & Inspiring....

Having already spent considerable time combing through various photography publications, attending conferences (WPPI & PPA) and participating in local and national workshops, I really enjoyed reading this book. Not only does it convey the author's warm and sensitive approach to her artistry, but also gives real world examples of how to engage the children, the parents and an overall attitude to the portrait session. There are so many wonderful and tender anecdotes that support a nurturing approach to bringing out a child's personality. Some really great nuggets to consider!

While I'd love to see meta-data on some of the shots as a guideline, the lighting setups and imagery are great. This book isn't about "show and tell", its more about "how" to engage and encourage growth in your (photographer) skill-set.

After reading this book I thought it was a great compliment to her DVD - Inside Contemporary Children's Photography - which I also own and have watched numerous times. Eventually it will all stick. :) Nicely done Tamara!

Lastly, I downloaded this to my iPad so I can have it electronically forever, so in future digital versions would love to see it in "color".

I'm working on learning Dora the Explorer's theme song now.....this taking pictures of children is tough. Thanks for creating a well written guide to help us.

About the Author
Robert Yeats is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Geological Society of America. He is senior consultant and partner in Earth Consultants International, an international firm focusing on earthquake hazards, and also an Emeritus Professor at Oregon State University. He has decades of experience in earthquake geology worldwide, including acting as chair of the International Lithosphere Project on active faults for several years and authoring three previous books: Geology of Earthquakes (with Kerry Sieh and Clarence R. Allen), Living with Earthquakes in California and Living with Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest. An endowed professorship at Oregon State University has been named in his honour and the AAPG have recognised his work by awarding him the Michel T. Halbouty Human Needs Award.

Essential reference for geohazards

Yeats' book will be an essential go-to reference for anyone working in seismic hazards, for at least the next decade. Yeats is uniquely qualified to pull together this massive compilation based on his decades-long experience on active fault databases and international working groups. He gives the active faults described a solid context of structural geology (his academic background) and seismotectonics, but also weaves in the seismic hazard implications (from his consulting experience). He also points out what we don't know. The only drawback to this book is that it will need revision in another decade, to include the next generation of copious neotectonic publications. But even then, the solid structural geology foundation of this book will remain relevant.

Great book.

This is the newest book by Robert Yeats. I have the two about earthquakes in the Pacific northwest and California and those two provide a great amount of info. This one examines world faults in good detail. I just wish the book was larger and had color maps. The major fault zones are described well with the latest paleoseismic studies. Anyone with an interest in earthquakes should get this book.

One of the 20th Century Classics in Linguistics

I have worked as a computational linguist for over 20 years now. And even while I was still in grad school, I grew weary of exceedingly complicated theoretical frameworks whose longevity was questionable, in part because in my experience, they have a tendency to lead to politics. But mostly this is true because I find them of marginal utility when I actually want to build something which is useful on my computer.

This book is exceedingly useful for building things on a computer... at least I have found it so.

So in my humble opinion, this book ranks with and beyond many of the what are thought of as the great works of linguistics, like, you know, Cours, Syntactic Structures, Bloomfield's and Sapir's Language, Jakobson's Kindersprache, and Humboldt's writings, which I regard very highly. And yes, I have read them all, too many times in some cases. The reason I rate this work so highly is that it consists of substantive generalizations, which by their nature must stand the test of time. Nor are they trivial generalizations.

That doesn't mean it's excessively difficult to understand what the generalizations are once you get into it. I would say that anyone who knows what a transitive verb is and who knows the difference between verbal tense and aspect would be able to follow this text if they were motivated. And if you are into text processing of any sort on a computer, like data mining or translation memory or full text retrieval, there's very good reason to be motivated to use this book.

Still there's a reason why nobody made this classification before Levin. You have to know what to look for. You have to resist the temptation to go into your head and start confusing the map with the territory. I regard this as a major problem for theoretical linguists, not only in modern times, but also historically.

The book proves that there is a relationship between the meaning of a verb and the syntactic structures that it can enter into. At the time the book was written, this was a much debated topic in the linguistics world, and I suspect that it is primarily the influence of this book which has largely laid that debate to rest. For example, one class she distinguishes (to choose completely at random) is verbs of substance emission. You can say both:

Substance/Source Alternation:

Heat radiates from the sun.

The sun radiates heat.

However, you cannot say:

The boy eats from the plate.

The plate eats the boy.

In the first half of the book, Levin distinguishes perhaps 70 syntactic alternations like this organized into 8 supercategories. In the second half, she inverts the classification. She distinguishes perhaps 150 semantic verb classes and then lists the syntactic alternations that characterize them.

For example, the Separate Verbs in English are: decouple, differentiate, disconnect, disentangle, etc. And these can undergo the transitive and intransitive Simple Reciprocal Alternations (which she defines in the first section), the Causative/Inchoative Alternation (also defined in section I) and so on.

And that's the essence of it. It is a reference work which covers about 3000 verbs in common English usage.

If you want to know where natural language processing began and see how it works, you need
this book. A few key terms are not adequately explained for the lay reader, but core principles
and the examples of reconfiguration of verbs into groupings help considerably in understanding
how our language use works.

About the Author
Rutger Bregman is one of Europe’s most prominent young thinkers. The 27-year-old historian and author has published four books on history, philosophy, and economics. His History of Progress was awarded the Belgian Liberales prize for best nonfiction book of 2013. The Dutch edition of Utopia for Realists became a national bestseller and sparked a basic income movement that soon made international headlines. We are obviously in a trap. Many in the rich world are clearly dissatisfied with their lives, and they have no idea what to do about it. Yet by the measure of all previous generations we should be in paradise. As Bregman demonstrates, we are wealthier by a great margin than anyone has been in history.

Bregman's answer to this dilemma is that we need use this wealth to buy ourselves more time and more security, not more stuff. What he is proposing is that we establish a universal basic income. This idea has a surprising and long history. Did you know that Richard Nixon almost succeeded in enacting it in the United States? And the results have been very positive wherever it has been tried. It has been shown to be a much more cost effective solution to homelessness than the current mishmash of programs provided by the middle class homelessness industry, for example.

With the rapid progress of automation, we may not have any other choice but to do this. We are fast approaching an era when a large part of the population have nothing to sell that anyone wants to buy.

this is excellent journalism

This is journalism as it should be: smoothly written, constructive, curious and, most importantly, scientifically grounded. Compliments to the author, especially for his case for a universal basic income: a crucial instrument in dealing with our vastly unequal world. This is an encouraging read for those, who, like me, want the destructive race to the bottom to end. Having felt the Bern, it's high time to read Bregman.

Patricia Queen Samour, MMSc, RD-Director, Nutrition Services, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts Patricia Samour was a founding member of the pediatric nutrition dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association. She has over 25 years experience in pediatric and adult academic hospitals; and is a very active volunteer with ADA in Massachusetts. She has been an author on many publications and has done numerous professional presentations. Kathy King, RD, LD-Helm Publishing, Lake Dallas, Texas Kathy King has been an entrepreneur since 1972 when she started her private practice specializing in outpatient counseling. About the Author
Amy J. Hackenberg is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at Indiana University.

Anderson Norton is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at Virginia Tech University.

Dr Robert J. (Bob) Wright holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mathematics from the University of Queensland (Australia) and a doctoral degree in mathematics education from the University of Georgia. He is an adjunct professor in mathematics education at Southern Cross University in New South Wales. Bob is an internationally recognized leader in assessment and instruction relating to children’s early arithmetical knowledge and strategies, publishing four books, and many articles and papers in this field. His work over the last 20 years has included the development of the Mathematics Recovery Program which focuses on providing specialist training for teachers to advance the numeracy levels of young children assessed as low-attainers. In Australia and New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Mexico and elsewhere, this program has been implemented widely and applied extensively to classroom teaching and to average and able learners as well as low-attainers. He has conducted several research projects funded by the Australian Research Council including the most recent project focusing on assessment and intervention in the early arithmetical learning of low-attaining 8–10-year-olds.

Developing Fractions Knowledge is a must-have tool in every teacher's toolkit. The authors have not just chosen activities that seem good or look reasonable to adults, they have chosen activities rooted in research based on how children make meaning of fractions.
The first three chapters provide an excellent explanation of the theory used in development of the activities and are a critical part to proper implementation. The following chapters provide tools for assessing student understanding and detailed explanations of potential student responses and follow up activities.
Fractions have long been a stumbling block for students, but need not be any longer!
