A Biblically based way to logically approach your goal

I have read multiple books about achieving success and accomplishing goals because I enjoy them, and I use them to develop my gift in leadership. Rather than tell you what you can get from book, here's what I observed.

Let's start by saying this book seems best for believers. Meaning one who accepts Christ as the savior and that God is in charge. Further, for optimum effectiveness one must believe the Bible is God's truthful word. I believe principles from the book could be employed without these foundations, but the motivation and likelihood of success would be much stronger with those foundations in place. To that point, I believe Pastor Bil would agree that embracing your goals without first accepting Christ is putting things out of order. Fortunately, it's free and only requires faith. (I'm sure Pastor Bil would be happy to provide guidance on that as well)

Building on that, I really enjoyed how this book routinely incorporated Bible stories and references. I've seen many Christian writers steer away from strong Biblical references in their books turning them into more of an emotional pep rally than God's teachings. Even though I had read these Biblical writings before, I found the breakdowns and interpretations very unique. (see chapter on Goal setting)

You'll find that there are action steps at the end of each chapter to build towards reaching your goals. I read the book straight through because I was looking at it for a learning tool, but believe following it through stepwise would really help. If I were to use this as an achievement tool I'd be certain to attack each chapter separately.

With regards to content, I particularly found the first chapters useful in identifying if my goals are truly aligned with God. In the past, I've had a hard time reconciling my ambitious to be successful with Christian theology and found much of the content useful in sorting that out. Understanding God's plan for my success versus my plan for success

Overall, I found it to be a great achievement book for Christians. Not necessarily more enlightening than all other books, but better at guiding the right kind of success.

This book not only helped change my mindset on business but a successful business with God! Bil shows biblical teaching on how God wants to and helps you in ALL aspects of your life! I would recommend this book to every person out there. This is a MUST read book!

Decent enough on portrait techniques.

This book contains some valuable information and tips on this difficult topic. The skin tone colour mixing part is especially helpful, and the illustrations are informative and high quality. I really like the way it goes into detail on different elements of the face, on application of paint and on toned grounds. Nevertheless, this book suffers from the same problem as all of them do. The step by step demonstrations are all made by the author/artist himself. This results in a lot of demonstrations basically using the same approach in different variations. I would really like to see a book of this kind with demonstrations by different artists, displaying different approaches and techniques! If you are very interested in glazing techniques, this should really satisfy you, since all the demonstrations involve a lot of glazing. That beeing said, the book actually includes a mini-demonstration by another artist with a different approach.

All in all a great book for the intermediate painter who wants to learn more about depicting the human form.

Good overview of technique

The author presents a coherent approach to painting in traditional "Old Master" style. To absorb the wealth of
valuable information takes several readings, as well as working through the exercises and much practice. Techniqes
are clearly described.
There are some impressive examples of painted portraits -- but not by the author. The step by step demos she herself
does are not inspiring and result in stiff, "tight", uninteresting images.
This book will be most useful to painters who have some experience and have already encountered the technical issues the author describes. Beginners will probably find it overwhelming.
Incidentally, the author's mentor Domenic Cretara, who supplies the introduction, is a modern master in his own
right, and his work is well worth looking up online.

Big disappointment

This book doesn't quite live up to other "Atelier" books by Watson-Guptill. it presents a rather timid approach to portraiture (glaze here, scumble there...). On top of that, some of the technical information is inaccurate: "flesh ochre" is NOT a pigment (page 39) -- it is a hue; "ASTM D-4236" is NOT a "color code" (page 41) but rather the labeling standard for potential health hazards in art materials; "PR101" is the color index designation for synthetic red earth pigments, not its "chemical description"; "rosso veneto", "pozzuoli red" and "terra rosa" are NOT "core red earth pigments" (page 54) -- these are variations in hues of the same pigment class (red iron oxide pigments, either PR101 or PR102) which can vary from brand to brand!; the author also states that "a well-balanced selection of glazing pigments would include lapis lazuli" (page 40) which is such bad advice because lapis lazuli in oil paint form is rarely available and prohibitively expensive. Of course, she fails to mention that ultramarine blue (PB29) is a synthetic and far cheaper alternative to it. Although there is a section entitled "the nature of pigments" (page 39), the author does not discuss or explain color indexes -- the standard and critical pigment information that is used by almost all artists' paint manufacturers today on their paint tube labels. The author (on page 150, etc.) misuses the term "scumble" (which is to apply a thin layer of lighter, more opaque color over a darker color) when she actually meant "glaze" (application of a thin layer of darker, more transparent paint over a lighter color)... AND THE LIST GOES ON. These technical inaccuracies aside, the step-by-step demonstrations are also such disappointing specimens. I would not recommend this book.

About the Author
Brett McLeod is an Associate Professor of Forestry and Natural Resources at Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York. Inspired by other creative farmers and foresters, McLeod’s 25-acre draft-horse–powered mountain homestead serves as a living laboratory for self-sufficiency. McLeod is also a professional lumberjack competitor and a former producer of the Stihl Ironjack Series and Stihl Timbersports Series. He coaches the Paul Smith’s Woodsmen’s team and founded the Adirondack Woodsmen’s School and the Adirondack Rural Skills and Homesteading Festival. He lives in Vermontville, New York.

It was good enough to make me reconsider my homesteading location!

I received this book at the start of the weekend and had it finished within a few hours. It's a fast read and I was able to make it through 95% of the book within 3 "nap time" periods with ease. Overall I think it's a great book.

There was roughly 5-7% that I thumbed through as it didn't offer me much use at the moment, or interest for that matter. We are currently in the 'burbs' still adjusting to life in a new region of the country. Once established, we are looking to begin rural homesteading within the next 15-36 months. Because of this, while some sections will prove useful in time, right now, it's lost on me. Really, it was mostly chapter 2 that I didn't read in depth. A few paragraphs here and there, but that's it. In this chapter it talks about tools and techniques needed and used on a woodland homestead, building your home from scratch from cord wood, building your own tools, using portable saw mills, etc.

The remaining chapters gave me some much needed food for thought. Until reading this book, I have been unable to find sufficient resources that detail how to establish a homestead in the woods. Everything from raising animals, beekeeping, orchards, gardens, etc! I have been trying to find a location that offered enough woods yet enough cleared but has untainted soil and ground water from surrounding industry and ag. Finding this book gave me new things to consider and has opened my eyes to the possibility of "taking to the woods", successfully. In our new home region, woodland lots are available often and usually better priced than semi-cleared lots. If I hadn't read this book, I would continue to overlook the benefits of woodland homesteads.

You will find information in here on how to "prune" and harvest firewood from living trees to allow regeneration from existing root stock. I had no idea that could be done! How to introduce livestock to weeds and bramble on your land and get them to begin to prefer these forms of fodder over traditional hay/feed options; allowing up to 25-30% reduction in purchased feed. Again, that's because most in woodland settings wouldn't have the cleared space to turn animals out onto traditional pastures. It gives information about breeds of various animals from chickens, turkey, sheep, cattle, etc that you can consider for a woodland homestead- how they adapt to the climate, fodder, foraging ability, etc. It gives instruction on how to clear a section to literally have an orchard in the middle of the woods. How to integrate vegetables and fruiting bushes into the orchard, and basic orcharding advice. You could take this same advice and use it for a large veggie patch if you were not so interested in orcharding.

The author is a fan of community and the community as a "resource". He talks about basic info on how to get neighbors and the community to help you and visa versa for free or bartering. This is something other homesteading books cover as well, but he shows how he did it with orcharding, etc. You'll get handy advice about how to use pigs to remove stumps, how to use all of your animals as a tiller and weed management system, How to use horses and oxen to pull the heavy loads, building the tools to pull the loads, how to build/graft living fences, grafting trees, how to grow in old stumps, look at trees and know if it's disease or woodpecker damage, survey your trees that would pass the grade for lumber, firewood, as well as furniture-grade wood, sugaring, etc. You'll even get a section about basket weaving with some types of "wood" found in some regions of the country (His region- Upstate NY).

Although I'm now in the Deep South, I found so many useful tips, techniques, and factoids to help when considering which property we will buy. It was a fast read, knowledgeable read, and in depth enough to get you started in the right direction. There are some things that I'll investigate further but it is nice having strong basics in once place at my fingertips!

Great overview for beginners and experienced homesteaders alike. It makes a nice gift and is refreshing to read for new ideas.

This is an easy and fast book to read even though the topics it covers are often complex. I have been a homesteader in Vermont for over 40 years and I still learned new things like how to figure the height of a tree so that I can decide if it will fall on my house or other objects before cutting it down. I wish I had had this a few times in the past! Great tips on splitting wood with nice explanations about different woods, their uses and characteristics. Great information on the care and use of tools including sharpening and safety. I will be giving this book to my nephew who has a small wood lot in the Berkshires. I do not eat or keep animals due to my plant based diet, but even without those chapters I found the book worth having for all its other uses. It is also nicely illustrated and environmentally sensitive. Read it even if you are not a homesteader or forester as it will make you more aware and able to live more simply without having to rely on the marketplace or on others.

Well written and wonderfully illustrated. So many homesteading books have the same basic information- this book really feels really fresh and offers a new look at homesteading; it's full of great tips,homemade contraptions, and short case studies. It made me think differently about how I could use integrate our patch of woods on our small homestead to grow food and forage. Awesome read.
